While Bocanegra has proven his abilities as an attacking defender, nabbing set-piece goals and a valuable game winning header against Guatemala in qualifying play, he is regarded by Bob Bradley as a well organized commander of the defensive line. We expect him to captain the squad throughout the World Cup finals in June (and July, hopefully).
After more than 100 appearance in four years at Fulham, Bocanegra moved to Rennes in 2008 where he lead the 3rd place team on a 17-game unbeaten streak. Throughout this period, Bocanegra earned Bob Bradley’s confidence as a team leader and has served as captain for most of the USMNT’s biggest matchups since 2007. If Onyewu recovers in time for South Africa, Bocanegra should have the support he needs to hold off the toughest offensive lines on earth.
