Charlie Davies was catapulted onto the global football scene in ‘08 with critical goals scored throughout international competition. A stellar qualifying run was cut short on October 13th, 2009, when a car crash left Davies in critical condition. Another passenger lost her life.
Since being released from the hospital in November, Davies has been at a rehab facility in Delaware, working to regain his strength. A badly broken leg, a broken elbow, and a lacerated bladder could have easily taken him out of the game for life, though Charlie is hell-bent on getting back in the game. In an interview with ESPN’s Jeremy Schaap, scheduled to air on December 4th, Davies makes clear that he intends to play in South Africa.
We also learned that Davies has been training with teammate Oguchi Onyewu (also injured) at the same Delaware facility. If these guys can get fit, the US squad will have a fighting chance.
ONELOVE salutes Charlie Davies on making a remarkable recovery. Keep up the hard work!

Uruguay is a country of 3.5 million people though, somehow, they have won as many World Cups as Argentina. Today’s qualifying win (a tie actually) over Costa Rica put the once-revered national squad back on the map. Forlan and Lugano brought their best while River Plate standout Sebastian Abreu was responsible for the team’s much-needed goal.
This is Uruguay’s first time back to the finals since being eliminated in the first round in 2002.

Algeria’s Antar Yahia went down in history today when he scored a game-winner against Egypt with 5 minutes left in the first half. Yahia’s goal, complemented with a strong defensive effort and flawless goalkeeping, made for an unforgettable match. While the Sudanese hosts would not allow excessive celebration in the streets, this win speaks volumes about Algeria’s will to make a peaceful statement. There couldn’t have been a better response to Saturday’s violence. ONELOVE salutes the Algerian squad on a well deserved World Cup birth.

Egypt and Algeria have their second playoff meeting in Sudan tomorrow. The game, initially scheduled in Algeria, was relocated to a neutral location after the Algerian team bus was mobbed by Egyptian fans heading into last Saturday’s match. 2 Algerian players went on the field with fresh bandages. Egypt won 2-0, but people are beginning to wonder if the game deserves a replay.
In 1993, a qualifying match between Zimbabwe and Egypt was annulled after Zimbabwe’s goalie was hit by a rock. The game was replayed and Egypt lost their place in the World Cup. The present situation feels eerily similar, though FIFA has made no statements about their plans for the match.
Tensions run deep between Egypt and Algeria. Soccer is, at best, a possible platform to get the two nations interacting on a respectful level. Saturday’s game was a major set back, but the world is watching now. Hopefully being on a global stage will help fans embrace the importance of fair play and fair support. A game like tomorrow’s can make or break any semblance of a relationship between the neighboring countries. While it may not be a World Cup final, this is most certainly a historical faceoff. We are hoping for a clean game, well played. No matter what happens, it’s on the fans to do the right thing.

The Wolves Striker will be put to the test today against Arsenal. Most recently named Player of the Year by the Football Association of Ireland, Kevin Doyle has been racking up goals despite a six-game winless streak for his club.
He is a clever goal scorer with a killer instinct. Arsenal may be the team to watch right now, but players like Doyle make the competition that much more enjoyable.

The ‘08 and ‘09 Visa MLS Defender of the Year has done incredible things for Columbus in 18 games this season. Should knee troubles persist for Onyewu in South Africa, we believe that Chad Marshall will make a worthy substitute. (more…)

While Bocanegra has proven his abilities as an attacking defender, nabbing set-piece goals and a valuable game winning header against Guatemala in qualifying play, he is regarded by Bob Bradley as a well organized commander of the defensive line. We expect him to captain the squad throughout the World Cup finals in June (and July, hopefully). (more…)

America’s favorite rapper/footballer is having an incredible year.
Dempsey’s 3 Confederations Cup goals helped change the course of American soccer history. He also had two game winning goals in the World Cup qualifiers against Cuba and Barbados last year. A former MLS “Rookie of The Year,” Dempsey continues to represent at Fulham, most recently racking up goals against Chelsea and Liverpool in a season that appears to be gaining in momentum. (more…)
