CHAMPS LEAGUE: GROUP STAGE PREDICTIONS

Friday, August 27th, 2010

The Champions League group stage begins in about three weeks and we are scouring the ONELOVE community for predictions, opinions, and irrational arguments surrounding the upcoming round.  To get the ball rolling, we caught up with OLFC West teammates Darren Davies and Cameron Araghi.

Davies, an LA area club coach, says: ‘Chelsea will win it (slight bias). They’ve been together, relatively unchanged, for three years and they have depth. Barça could win, especially with the addition of Villa, and Real is pretty damn serious. Picking up Ozil was huge. And then Mourinho has the formula for success.’

Cameron Araghi, another ONELOVE Ambassador, chimes in: ‘I always say Barça.  They have the statistics.  They have an attack-minded forward in Villa and if Mascherano signs, they will be the best team on earth.  I see Real Madrid doing very well this year, but they will fall short in the major tournaments.  And I may be wrong, but something tells me that Rafa is going to ruin Inter.’

What do you say?  Who will surprise us this year?  Who will disappoint?

The group stage fixtures will take place in September (14/15, 28/29), October (19/20), November (2/3, 23/24), and wrap up in early December (7/8).

WORLD CUP ANALYSIS: Group D

Sunday, June 13th, 2010

by Philip Cramer

Group D: Germany, Ghana, Serbia, Australia

Germany is frustratingly predictable; steady, organized and efficient they always find a way to win when others like England and Holland always seem to find a way to lose.

This is a different German team that is younger and is also more cosmopolitan with sons of immigrants spread across the roster. There are only seven who played in 2006 and 13 of the 23 are 25 years or younger. Experience is critical and in defense they still have Philip Lahm, Arne Friedrich and Per Mertesacker. In Jerome Boateng and Serdar Tasci they have more than adequate defenders, both in their early 20’s who will be around for the next decade. Lahm is menacing on the attack which he does frequently while the others are all strong and tall and rarely get beaten in the air.

They might not even miss Michael Ballack in midfield thanks to the emergence of Mesut Oezil who almost single-handedly destroyed England in the Euro U-21 final last year. Oezil is one of those gifted players who comes along very often and has already shown that he can make the transition from the U-21 world. Bastian Schweinsteiger and Thomas Mueller, another emerging star will ensure a steady supply of opportunities for the forwards where Germany is weakest.

Miroslav Klose and Lukas Podolski are still around, although expect Klose to play a part time role only. The newly minted German citizen, Cacau originally from Brazil will add a flair that they have often lacked. Stefan Kiessling has been on the cusp of the national team for some time but an excellent season in which he finished second in the Bundesliga scoring earned him a trip to South Africa.

I expect Germany to advance fairly far despite their relative inexperience but the organization and style of play will win games.

Disclaimer – as an unrepentant Anglophile whose first awareness of the World Cup was England in 1966 forced me to into the ABG (anyone but Germany) camp and their totally undeserved progress to the final in 1982 secured my lifetime membership. Still nothing will stop them from marching into the second round.

I wouldn’t be so certain of forecasting their progress if it wasn’t for the absence of Michael Essien for Ghana. They don’t have the same luxury as Germany in compensating for the loss of Essien whose world class talent in midfield is at the heart of the Ghanaian team. This was evident in 2006 when Ghana were a different team in the round of 16 against Brazil when he was suspended.

Ghana still has an excellent team with many players returning from the 2006. Defenders, John Pantsil and John Mensah both play in the Premier League. Sulley Montari of Inter Milan will have to pick up the slack in midfield although his disciplinary record could be a problem. In a league game in Italy this season he got two yellows in his first two touches within three minutes of coming on as a sub.

Derek Boateng and Stephen Appiah are two other experienced midfielders that have the experience and skill to play at this level. Up front Ghana needs to be more disciplined and more patient than in ’06 when they constantly wasted opportunities with rushed shots from too far. Asimoah Gyan and Kevin Prince Boateng both have experience and we might see quite a bit of Dominic Adiyiah who has just finished his first year at AC Milan. He was chosen as the best player at the FIFA U20 World Cup last year won by Ghana scoring eight goals in seven games.

They have talent, speed and strength but can be ragged and undisciplined at times. They will probably battle it out with Serbia to see who moves on with Germany.

Serbia’s debut in the finals in 2006 saw them finish last with no points in the ultimate group of death including a 6-0 loss to Argentina at their best. Don’t be fooled by the fact that it was their debut in the finals. As part of the former Yugoslavia they have a longer soccer tradition including a couple of fourth place finishes.

They qualified with ease edging out France for the top spot giving up only 8 goals in 10 matches which reflects their uncompromising toughness associated with many of the former iron curtain countries.

At the back they have two of the toughest Premier League defenders in Nemanja Vidic of Man. Utd and Branislaw Ivanovic of Chelsea. In midfield they have Milan Jovanovic who made his debut at 26 but proved his pedigree with 5 goals in qualifying as well as making quite a few more from his attacking role down the left. He signed with Liverpool prior to the World Cup with Valencia and A.C. Milan both chasing after him as well. The defensive midfield is anchored by Dejan Stankovic who, despite a quiet season with Inter Milan is still the heart and soul of the team.

They are relatively weak up front with Marko Pantelic coming off a strong season with Ajax and Nikola Zigic of Valencia. The ability of Jovanovic and Stankovic to score goals will take some of the burden off the front two. Zigic is listed at 6 foot 8 inches, the Serbian in the Peter Crouch mould which is not necessarily a plus in my book.

Long time coach Radomir Antic has coached both Barcelona and Real Madrid and has been the Serbian coach since 2004. His experience has allowed Serbia to achieve a high level of consistency.

This leaves Australia facing an uphill task in one of the ‘groups of death’. Despite their impressive performance in Germany where they lost to Italy on a penalty in the last minute, they do not appear as strong as they were then.

They still have the ever reliable Mark Schwartzer in goal and a solid defense with Luke Wilkshire and Lucas Neill in defense. Up front they have Tin Cahill and a fit Harry Kewell who has been brilliant on occasion during his career but whether he can still play up to that standard remains to be seen.

The U.S. team beat Australia quite easily in their final warm up game a week ago and if that is any indication Australia will struggle to win any of their games.

Fearless forecast:

1 – Germany
2 – Serbia

OGUCHI WHERE ART THOU?

Monday, April 26th, 2010

by Yoni Ginsburg

What was a big summer transfer to a well respected European club for American Oguchi Onyewu might have been a big mistake. The 6′4 center half was signed by AC Milan this past summer and they had high hopes for him but a gruesome knee injury sustained in a US World Cup Qualifier in October against Costa Rica forced him to miss all of Milan’s club season in the Serie A.

Gooch on USMNT duty

Onyewu, the son of Nigerian immigrants and a product of the highly regarded IMG Soccer Academy, transferred from Belgian side Standard Liège where he led the club to two consecutive Belgian league championships.
What will Bob Bradley do with his star center back? Everyone knows that he is skilled enough to play for the USMNT but is he fit enough is the question. Possible replacements could be the extremely talented and young Omar Gonzalez of the Los Angeles Galaxy or Jay Demerit who is with Watford in the Championship.

What do you think?

THE CURIOUS CASE OF MARIO BALOTELLI

Wednesday, April 21st, 2010

Is Super Mario being neglected at Inter or has he brought the negativity upon himself?  As you can imagine, it’s a combination of both.  The real question is, would the 19 year old be better off elsewhere?  He claims allegiance to A.C. Milan (funny, but not a terrible idea) and clubs all over the world would sign him in a heartbeat.

SPIRITUAL HEALER HAS ANSWER TO BECKHAM WOES. REALLY?

Saturday, March 27th, 2010

Dr Eliyantha Lindsay White, personal physician to Sri Lanka president Mahinda Rajapaksewho, has publicly offered his services to David Beckham, ensuring that he can have the Galaxy midfielder’s Achilles back to full strength in 3 days.

The doctor was recently quoted by the AFP: “I am ready to treat him…His condition can be easily treated and within three days he will be able to go back to playing. His case is simple. I can treat him. He can play again.”

Are we buying this?

NO WORLD CUP FOR BECKHAM

Monday, March 15th, 2010

Beckham on Sunday – photo credit: AP

Yesterday’s injury proved to be a torn Achilles tendon, which means 5-6 months before Beckham can even run around. The midfielder will most likely not play again at the international level.

There is plenty of speculation as to who will take his place in the lineup, but no decisions have been made.

Sorry, Becks. Get well soon.

BEST OF EUROPE: United Squash Milan

Thursday, March 11th, 2010

We expected Manchester United to win today, but 4-0 was an upset by anyone’s standards.  Rooney, Fletcher, and Park made the score sheet, thanks to brilliant supporting play from every square inch of the field.

Rooney (now with 30 goals in all competition this season) was being compared to United great Dennis Law today.  The truth is that he was simply being his own legendary self.

BEST OF EUROPE: These Are The Chaaampiooons!

Wednesday, February 17th, 2010

By Jake Glavies

David Beckham’s first match against former club Manchester United was a bit anticlimactic thanks in large part to the stellar play of striker Wayne Rooney.

Playing at the San Siro in the first leg of the Champions League round of 16 Tuesday, Rooney was nothing short of magnificent while netting two late goals in just eight minutes to give United a 3-2 victory over Beckham and AC Milan. The first goal came in the 66th minute when Rooney headed home a cross from substitute Antonio Valencia; he used his head again for his second score, knocking in a pass from Darren Fletcher. The scores were Rooney’s first European goals of a year, which give him a total of 25 for the season.

Milan got on the board first when Ronaldinho scored in the third minute off a Beckham free kick. Paul Scholes made it a 1-1 match with a goal in the 36th minute. After the break it was all Rooney until Milan’s Clarence Seedorf drew the Rossoneri to within one, hitting the back of the net at the 85-minute mark.

In other Champions League action, Lyon stunned red-hot Real Madrid 1-0 in the first leg of their showdown. Jean Makoun netted the match’s lone goal when he scored on a rocket shot from 25-yards out. Madrid dominated every facet of the match except the scoreboard. The squad had six shots on goal compared to four for Lyon; it also attempted three more corners and held the ball for 66 percent of the match.

The closest Madrid got to lighting up the scoreboard came in the first half when Gonzalo Higuaín received a quality pass from Cristiano Ronaldo but couldn’t manage to get past defender Jean-Alain Boumsong. In the second half, Ronaldo tried his best from 25-yards away but was rejected by goalkeeper Hugo Lloris.

Heading into the match, the return of former Lyon star Karim Benzema dominated headlines. Benzema entered the match in the 64th minute as a substitute for Higuaín and had little to show leading up to the final whistle.

Despite allowing an away goal, Madrid’s statistical dominance Tuesday will give it an advantage when Lyon travels to the Bernabeu March 10. United will take its distinct goal advantage home to Old Trafford when it faces Milan again the same day.

AC MILAN BACK IN CLASSIC FORM

Saturday, February 13th, 2010

Milan was INCREDIBLE against Udinese yesterday.

Beckham, whose game has actually gotten better since arriving in Milan, complemented Ronaldinho at midfield to make for some of the most beautiful plays we’ve seen all year in the Serie A.

The final result was 3-2 in Milan’s favor.

Milan has a chance of catching up with Inter, but I think everyone is more interested to see what happens in the Champions League. Can Milan out-scrap/out-shine/out-play Manchester United? It’s a tough call. Let us know what you think.
