CHAMPS LEAGUE: GROUP STAGE PREDICTIONS

Friday, August 27th, 2010

The Champions League group stage begins in about three weeks and we are scouring the ONELOVE community for predictions, opinions, and irrational arguments surrounding the upcoming round.  To get the ball rolling, we caught up with OLFC West teammates Darren Davies and Cameron Araghi.

Davies, an LA area club coach, says: ‘Chelsea will win it (slight bias). They’ve been together, relatively unchanged, for three years and they have depth. Barça could win, especially with the addition of Villa, and Real is pretty damn serious. Picking up Ozil was huge. And then Mourinho has the formula for success.’

Cameron Araghi, another ONELOVE Ambassador, chimes in: ‘I always say Barça.  They have the statistics.  They have an attack-minded forward in Villa and if Mascherano signs, they will be the best team on earth.  I see Real Madrid doing very well this year, but they will fall short in the major tournaments.  And I may be wrong, but something tells me that Rafa is going to ruin Inter.’

What do you say?  Who will surprise us this year?  Who will disappoint?

The group stage fixtures will take place in September (14/15, 28/29), October (19/20), November (2/3, 23/24), and wrap up in early December (7/8).

WORLD CUP ANALYSIS: Group E

Monday, June 14th, 2010

by Philip Cramer

Group E: Cameroon, Netherlands, Denmark, Japan

Cameroon

Cameroon has more experience in the World Cup than any other African nation and they bring a mix of youth and experience that should hold them in good stead. They have also avoided the injury bug that has hurt Ghana, Nigeria and the Ivory Coast.

They have a seasoned group of defenders which is becoming increasingly important in what is turning out to be a fairly low scoring cup thus far. A surprise has been that the coach Paul Le Guen has announced that the presumptive starting keeper, Carlos Kemeni will be benched for the opening game against Japan.

On defense Benoit Assou-Ekotto and Sebastian Bassong are both coming off solid seasons with Tottenham Hotspurs. Nicolas Nkoulou, one of the bright young stars in the tournament as well as the experienced Stephane Mbia who anchors the Marseilles central defense complete a solid quartet.

In midfield, Alexandre Song of Arsenal who is strong and technically gifted defense oriented player as well as Jean Makoun, a veteran with Lyon.

Cameroon play a 4-3-1-2 formation with much of the strength in the back. The defensive midfielders have no hesitation to move into the attack to support the key for Cameroon,

Three time African Footballer of the Year, Samuel Eto’o who has had a stellar career at Barcelona and now Inter Milan is their inspirational leader. Although still only 29 he has 42 goals in 92 appearances for the Indomitable Lions. Partnering him up front will be Pierre Webo another veteran with Achille Emana supporting them from the midfield position.

The team has balance and experience and could be the first African team to finally get further than the quarter finals.

Denmark

Denmark brings a team with lots of experience. They are a solid team that plays a typical Northern European style which is both disciplined and direct.

In goal they have the experienced Thomas Sorensen of Stoke although a late season injury could be a problem. In defense they have the solid Daniel Agger of Liverpool and the rising star, Simon Kjaer, also fighting an injury. Kjaer was excellent in containing both Christian Ronaldo and Zlatan Ibrahimovic in qualifying games allowing Denmark to finish ahead of Portugal as well as eliminate Sweden from the finals. They also have the experienced Per Kroldrup to help out.

Their key holding midfielder, Christian Poulson is a solid tackler and great distributor of the ball. With 74 caps the Juventus player is a key to the team’s success. Daniel Jensen is another veteran who scored the vital goal to beat Portugal away to ensure qualification.

Up front they have Nicklas Bentner of Arsenal, a strong finisher who at 22 is the second youngest players on the team. Although somewhat inconsistent he is a potential game winner. Alongside him, Soren Larsen has a nose for goals, hitting the net 11 times in 18 appearances. He led all scorers in the group ahead of Ronaldo. They also have Dennis Rommedahl and Jon-Dahl Tomasson who have both seen better days but whose experience could be valuable coming off the bench.

Japan

Japan is somewhat of an enigma. With all but four of their players based in the J-League they have little experience at the top club level.

In defense they have Yuji Nakazawa, their central defensive lynchpin and the heart of the team with over 100 caps. The balance of the defense has a considerable amount of international experience and will keep them in games.

Yasuhito Endo is one of their midfield keys with over 90 caps along with Keisuke Honda who featured prominently in CSKA Moscow’s charge to the quarter finals of the European Cup this past season.

Keiji Amada is another veteran up front with 16 goals and 70 appearances. Shinji Okazaki will probably be the other starter up front. He is lethal from close up and is a classic goal poacher with 16 in only 28 international appearances. He creates goals as well and will require close marking.

Whether their relative lack of experience in European leagues will hurt remains to be seen. Their style is similar to South Korea’s. They work together well as a team and have both speed and unflagging energy. A ‘never say die’ attitude will keep opponents honest and will be made to pay if they take Japan too lightly.

Holland

It’s a tribute to Dutch soccer that a relatively small country with a population of a little over 16 million can produce a constant supply of great players and teams since they emerged as a soccer power in the early 1970’s. Their current team is no different. Their Achilles heel could be in goal and in defense. They are loaded with world class talent in midfield and up front.

Since the international retirement of Edwin Van Der Saar they lack a world class keeper but Maarten Stekelenberg of Ajax is dependable and not prone to errors.

John Heitenga of Everton is a versatile defender and one of the keys to Everton’s solid performance in the Premier League. Gregory Van Der Wiel is a rising star with Ajax whose ability will be tested in South Africa. Veterans Giovanni Van Bronckhorst, Andre Ooijer and Khalid Boulahrouz all have the necessary experience to see the team comfortably through the first round but might be troubled against some of their stronger potential opponents in the later rounds.

Mark Van Bommel is a tough defensive midfielder who will have to work hard on defense, something he is more than capable of having assumed that role at Bayern Munich for the past few seasons. Wesley Sneijder is the kingpin in the middle. He has few peers in Europe in the passing game and can dictate the pace as needed. His brilliance in set pieces and his knack for scoring from long range makes him the complete player. He was a key to Real Madrid’s midfield for three years when they inexplicably let him escape to Inter Milan where he has cemented his reputation, leading them to the triple.

Rafael Van Der Vaart of Real Madrid, Nigel De Jong of Manchester City and Denny De Zeew of Ajax complete a midfield that has few peers.

Up front they have Robin Van Persie of Arsenal who is coming of an injury plagued season at Arsenal but is now fully fit. Arjen Robben has resuscitated his career at Bayern Munich after a frustrating few years at Real Madrid. He plays mostly on the wing and both creates and scores goals as well as possessing deceptive speed. His receding hair and his already lengthy career belie his relatively young age of 26. Klaas Jan Huntelaar is another gifted striker who led the qualifying group in scoring but had a frustrating season at Real Madrid prior to his recent move to A.C. Milan and will probably be partnering Van Persie up front.

Whether Holland can finally put it all together and win the cup remains to be seen but if either Spain or Brazil falters they could finally win one. Cameroon has enough talent and experience to advance as well. Denmark and Japan will make their opponents work hard.

Fearless forecast:

1 Cameroon
2 Holland

These two meet in the final group game by which time I expect both to have already secured their places in the next round. Holland rests a few players and Cameroon pulls off a mild surprise.

RIBERY TO MISS INTER SHOWDOWN

Monday, May 17th, 2010

by Marc Roseblade

Bayern Munich’s Franck Ribery is going to miss the Champions League final. The Court of Arbitration for Sport rejected his appeal against a 2-match ban following a red card in the Lyon semi-final.

UEFA had already dismissed an appeal, but CAS has ruled out any possibility of a Saturday showing against Inter.

Bayern had appealed to UEFA with the hope that UEFA would cut the ban to just the one game, which would have allowed Ribery to play in the final as he had already missed the second leg of the semi-final against Lyon.

Once again bureaucracy wins the day and sensibility loses out

A STELLAR FINISH FOR UCL FINALISTS

Sunday, May 16th, 2010

By Marc Roseblade

Inter Milan today tied up the Scudetto for the 5th successive year in a row by defeating Siena 1 nil. Jose Mourinhos men finished the season 2 points above 2nd placed Roma who also won today with a 2 nil victory away to Chievo.

The Milan side now head to Madrid and the Santiago Bernabeu stadium in chase of the Champions league winners title as they face off against German champions Bayern Munich.

Bayern themselves clinched the Bundesliga with a final day 3-1 away win to Hertha on the 8th May and yesterday completed a domestic double by hammering the cup holders Werder Bremen 4-0 in the German cup final.

Uncharacteristically, the champions league final is being held on a Saturday evening but this enables both sides a full week to prepare for what looks like being a fantastic prospect for watching football supporters all over Europe and the World.

The 8 day festival of football has already started in Madrid which started with the delivery of the Champions league trophy on Friday. The festival includes all manner of activities from exhibition matches which involves top former international talent from all over Europe to audio visionary spectacles from Champions league sponsers. It truly encompasses all age groups and encourages people to interact withy the Champions league experience.

It promises to be a magnificent spectacle and with players such as Arjen Robben, Franck Ribéry, Bastian Schweinsteiger, Claudio Pizarro, Mark van Bommel for Bayern & Lucio Marco Materazzi, Eto’o, Diego Milito & Wesley Sneijder for Inter, it really is lining up as a night of fireworks and superb footballing skills. Plenty of goals would be great as well.

Final – 22/05/2010 – 20:45CET ( 20:45 ) – Santiago Bernabéu – Madrid

INTER HEAD FOR HALLOWED GROUND

Thursday, April 29th, 2010

The Special One does it again…

It was a hard-fought Champions League semi-final. Barcelona had opportunities to win, but couldn’t penetrate Mourinho’s defensive line for a second goal. We didn’t really see anything special from Barça until Pique scored brilliantly in the final 10 minutes of play. From there, you felt as if Xavi, Pique and Bojan would combine for something miraculous. It didn’t happen.

And now, Inter head to their first European final since 1972. They have a shot at winning their first European trophy since 1965.

WORLD CUP PROFILES: Germany

Wednesday, March 24th, 2010

By Jake Glavies

After finishing third on their home soil at the 2006 World Cup, Germany is one of a handful of teams with a legitimate chance to take home the title in 2010.

Aiming for efficiency over flash, the Germans dissect the game – slicing through their opponents with ease. Finishing first in European Group 4 qualifying, Germany is headed by longtime captain Michael Ballack and feared Bayern Munich striker Miroslav Klose. Ballack is without question the leader of the German team. With 97 caps to his name, the Chelsea midfielder will be the driving force behind any German success in South Africa.

The squad has tasted its share of success in recent years, though it’s consistently fallen short of taking home the top prize. Germany has finished in the top four in its last three major competitions, as they were runners up at the 2002 World Cup in Korea and Japan, third in 2006 and second at Euro 2008 in Austria and Switzerland.

If Joachim Loew’s team is to win in Africa, it’ll have to score. A lot. And that’s where Klose comes in. Though he has just one club goal to his name this season, Klose earned the Golden Boot Award as the top goal scorer at the 2006 World Cup when he netted five scores. He also notched five goals at the 2002 World Cup, giving him 10 for his career – leaving him six shy of overtaking Brazil’s Ronaldo as the all-time leading scorer in World Cup history. His 48 career scores put him third all-time in German history behind Joachim Streich and Gerd Muller.

The only question mark surrounding the team in the build up to the cup is just who will be the man in goal. After the retirement of Jens Lehmann, and the tragic suicide of Robert Enke in 2009, Germany will need one of its young keepers to step up and fill the spot at the back. Rene Adler is at the top of Loew’s list right now, but with just over 80 days left before kickoff, nothing is for sure. Manuel Neuer and Tim Wiese will also look to catch the coach’s eye before the squad leaves for Africa.

An easy draw means that Loew’s men will have time to get into fighting shape before facing some of the world’s best. Opening with group matches against Ghana, Australia and Serbia, Germany should cruise into the Round of 16. One of the more imposing teams in the tournament, don’t be surprised if Germany physically pounds its opponents into submission.

THE BEST OF EUROPE: Champions League Draw for Final 8

Friday, March 19th, 2010

Now it get’s interesting.  Here are the Quarter-final matchups:

- Arsenal vs Barcelona –   These teams met in the UCL final back in 2006.  It’ll be the first time that Frabregas, a former Barça youth star, will make a visiting appearance at the Nou Camp.  This is the battle that I’ve been waiting for;  two very self-aware squads with brilliant leadership.  It’ll be like a game of chess.

- Manchester United vs Bayern Munich.  This should go United’s way, but it’s impossible to tell.  Both are in tip-top form.

- Inter Milan vs CSKA Moskva.  Smart money is on Inter.

- Lyon vs Bordeaux.  A tough call.  Lyon are in 5th behind 1st place Bordeaux in the Ligue 1, but they only trail by 2 points.  Bordeaux may have a slight edge, but either side could make it to the final.

ONELOVE SPOTLIGHT: Stevan Jovetic

Tuesday, March 9th, 2010

Stevan Jovetic – photo credit: Getty Images

Despite being knocked out by Bayern Munich on goal aggregate, you have to appreciate Fiorentina’s performance today.  Anyone who saw the game couldn’t help noticing the talents of 20 year old Stevan Jovetic.  He had 2 goals on the day and immediately became a summer-transfer target for larger clubs.

Jovetic started his career at Partizan when he was 16 and was named the squad’s captain just two years later.  After scoring 12 goals in 51 appearances for the club, Jovetic received interest from high-profile teams such as Manchester United and Real Madrid, but instead made the move to Serie A squad Fiorentina.  He netted two goals to beat Liverpool in last season’s group stage of the UEFA Champions League.  After today’s performance, the young stunner has surely earned a place in Viola history.

TITLE RACE IN GERMANY

Friday, February 19th, 2010

By Jake Glavies

The race for this season’s Bundesliga title has become one of the tightest competitions in Europe as surprise leader Bayer Leverkusen tries to hold off powerhouse Bayern Munich. Currently tied atop the Bundesliga table with 48 points each, the two teams are in a dead heat heading into the final stretch of the season.

Bayern – winners of seven of the last 10 German league crowns – has put together nine-straight wins and has gone 11-0-4 in its last 15 matches. Stocked with world-class talent, Louis van Gaal’s team is one of the best in Europe. Led by 24-year-old forward Mario Gomez at the front, Franck Ribery in the middle and defender Daniel van Buyten at the back, the squad is rock-solid from start to finish.

With just two of its next seven matches against teams in the top five in the league, Bayern will certainly be able to extend its already impressive winning streak over the coming weeks. Though every match poses a challenge, Gaal and Co. have certainly circled April 10 on their calendars. In just under two months, Bayern will travel to BayArena to face Leverkusen in the hopes of coming home with sole possession of the league lead.

While Bayern has won nine-straight, Leverkusen has managed to stay out of the loss column the entire season – a major factor in its quest for a first Bundesliga title. Working to debunk the nickname Neverkusen, manager Jupp Heynckes boasts the league’s top scorer in Stefan Kiessling, another double digit scorer in Eren Derdiyok and even a third option in Toni Kroos. This trio has helped Leverkusen to a league-high 48 goals, where it’s tied with Bayern.

The squad’s defense is what’s kept it in title contention all season, though. Allowing a league-low 18 scores, the defensive team of Sami Hyypia, Manuel Friedrich, Michal Kadlec and Daniel Schwabb has left a number of team’s frustrated.

Whatever transpires between now and the end of the season though, Bayern and Leverkusen have added an element of suspense to this Bundesliga season that will surely get even the most casual soccer fans on the edge of their seats.
