Teams representing 64 countries will converge on Rio De Janeiro in September for an event that has transformed the lives of some 30,000 homeless people from around the world. Our latest tee, “ORDEM e PROGRESSO” was designed by JRV as a nod to the host country.  All profits go directly to the HWC.

TOP 10 MOST EXPENSIVE NATIONAL TEAMS

Wednesday, May 12th, 2010

by Rick Minars

Europe’s Frontier Economics has released a list of the top ten most expensive teams participating in the 2010 World Cup. Shown here in Euros (rounded to the nearest million), the numbers represent the sum of each player’s current value for their respective club team.

Top Ten:

1. Spain- Worth €303 million euros. Which includes players for example, Iniesta worth (€44m), and Torres at (€43m) to help make bulk of what the team is worth.

2. Argentina- Worth €293 million. Yes of course, “Mi Argentina quierida!” Unfortunately, this team is worth this much because Messi is worth €140 million. That’s right he is worth way more than Cristiano Ronaldo. Also in the mix for Argentina is Gonzalo Higuain who is reported to be worth €53 million. I wonder what Argentina would really be worth if Maradona selected all the overseas players that play in Europe rather than some of the local based players?

3. England- Worth €263 million. Notable, Wayne Rooney being the most expensive player on the English side worth at €59 million.

4. Brazil- Worth €223 million. Yes tell me about it! Absolutely shocking! The team with the most World Cups won and with quality players all over the world falls in a shocking fourth place! Kaka is the most expensive player on the Brazilian national side worth at €41 million.

5. Portugal- Worth €201 million. The bulk is carried by Cristiano Ronaldo worth €95 million for the Portugal national side.

6. France- Worth €180 million. Franck Ribery was noted as being one of the most expensive on the team.

7.Germany- Worth €156 million. Germany actually leads Holland by a couple of thousands with notable players like Ballack, Podolski and Lahm leading the way for the German side.

8. Holland- Worth €156 million. Holland having quality players such as Robben and Van Persie leading their national side in being the most expensive.

9. Ivory Coast- Worth €130 million. Notable players leading the way for Ivory Coast is Didier Drogba.

10. Italy- Worth €127 million. Yes the reigning World Cup Champions are the last team to cap the top ten most expensive national sides in the World Cup.

HOMELESS WORLD CUP: A Call To Action

Monday, April 19th, 2010

by Mona Chatterjee

My first experience with the Homeless World Cup began 3 years ago when I happened upon “Kicking It”, a film chronicling the lives of seven players as they journey to Cape Town 2006 Homeless World Cup and become heroes. The Homeless World Cup, which began in 2003, is an annually held international football tournament uniting and celebrating teams of people who are homeless but have rebuilt their lives through the power of the beautiful game.

I traveled to the HWC in Milan, Italy last year to volunteer with the program and saw first-hand how dramatic the program truly is, meeting players and coaches from all over the world. These people prove that football has the power to help people who are otherwise disadvantaged (whether it is because of drug/alcohol abuse, political exile or poverty) to build up their self-confidence and lead them towards a path for a better future. Numerous players I met have now become leaders in their communities. Some are now coaches for local street soccer outreach programs and even semi-professional football teams. Over 75% of the players worldwide have been reunited with family members, moved into homes and are gainfully employed.

I’d like to briefly introduce you to a few inspirational players.

Michele da Silva represented Brazil at the Copenhagen 2007 Homeless World Cup, winning best female player before going on to be selected to represent Brazil in the national under 21’s women’s team.

David Duke represented Scotland at the Gothenberg 2004 Homeless World Cup and is now the founder of Street Soccer Scotland that works with 500 homeless people.

The HWC has supported and worked with over 30,000 people annually and has generated a force that fosters grassroots football projects throughout the world. Over 60 nations are planning to attend the upcoming HWC in Rio de Janeiro this September to proudly represent their countries. Our current goal at the HWC is to help as many teams/players as possible to attain that goal. There are many HWC volunteers currently raising funds for needy players around the world. I would like to raise as much awareness for the HWC in the United States as possible and, to that end, am spearheading volunteer programs here for anyone who wants to help us coordinate fundraising events and viewing parties for the upcoming World Cup in South Africa to raise money for the HWC.

I am traveling to Finland this June to interview the players, coaches and managers of the Finland Homeless Street Soccer team and see firsthand their national finals. Last year in Milan, I was lucky enough to meet the young players in the Finnish national team and their incredible coach whose own story is beautiful and selfless. Their team was so cohesive and close it brought tears to my eyes on my last day with them. Many countries do not have such well-coordinated and publicly supported homeless national street soccer programs, so my overall goal is to use the Finnish program as a model for those countries struggling to maintain their own or initiate their own programs. And, in further effort to raise money to help send at least one player to the HWC in 2010, I have set up a donations website and blog where you can follow me as I train for the Santa Claus Marathon in Finland at the Arctic Circle and then blog my trip to Finland.

AROUND THE WORLD: International Friendlies

Tuesday, March 2nd, 2010

By Yoni Ginsberg

Robinho celebrates in Ireland – photo credit: Belfast Telegraph

In preparation for the World Cup, there will be some International Friendlies this week. Lets take a look at the matches:

Ireland vs Brazil- Croke Park hosted the first game today with Ireland taking on the Brazilians. Keith Andrews had an own-goal for Ireland, but it was Robinho’s goal that will surely grab headlines tomorrow. The Santos striker is showing us that he will be ready for South Africa, despite a lackluster stint at Manchester City.

The remaining matches will be held on Wednesday.

Germany vs Argentina- The European powerhouse faces Messi and friends at Bayern’s Allianz Arena. This match should have a final feel to it as I’m sure each of these coaches will want to test his squad’s potential. Prediction: Germany with the home field advantage, 2-0.

Netherlands vs USA- American head coach Bob Bradley has filled his squad with non MLS players including Joze Altidore, Landon Donovan, and Maurice Edu (who most recently grabbed a game-winner in the Galsgow derby). However, the Dutch are always an extremely technical team with great passing and discipline. Prediction: Wesley Sneijder with a brace, Netherlands 3-1.

England vs Egypt- The Three Lions face the newly crowned African champions in Wembley Stadium.  Rooney, Lampard, and new captain Rio Ferdinand shouldn’t have trouble taking on Amr Zaki and Mido. Prediction: England 3-0.

France vs Spain- Perhaps the day’s most interesting and exciting match has Les Blues taking on the holding European champions.  The game is in the Stade De France and the crowd will surely play a factor in this one. France, however, will need to do a lot in order to keep up with a team (which I think) is better than they are. Prediction: 1-1, Benzema and David Villa.

What do you think?  Predictions anybody?
