SPAIN ANNOUNCES OFFICIAL ROSTER

Thursday, May 20th, 2010

by Marc Roseblade

Pedro, Valdes, and Martinez will represent Spain in South Africa

Fernando Torres and Cesc Fabregas have both been included in Spain’s final 23-man squad for the 2010 South Africa World Cup next month along with uncapped trio Victor Valdes, Pedro Rodriguez and Javi Martinez. (Valdes has never been capped? Really?)

The Liverpool striker Torres and Barcelona target Fabregas are still recovering from injuries that forced them to miss the end of the English Premiership but will still travel to the finals.

Valdes has been chosen as the 3rd goalie with Diego Lopez and David De Gea missing out on a keeper’s spot. Valdes’ team-mate, winger Pedro, has also been included following a fine season with the La Liga champions. The other newcomer to the squad is Athletic Bilbaos’ midfielder Martinez.

Those cut from the 30 man original squad are Cesar Azpilicueta, Marcos Senna, Santi Cazorla, Dani Guiza and Alvaro Negredo.

Spain’s first round opponents in South Africa are Switzerland, Chile and Honduras.

The Euro 2008 champions will be hoping to continue an excellent run of form in the past few years and are quietly confident of actually winning the World Cup for the 1st time.
Viva España!!!

SPAIN’S WORLD CUP SQUAD:

Goalkeepers: Iker Casillas (Real Madrid), Jose Reina (Liverpool), Victor Valdes (Barcelona)

FABREGAS READY FOR CATALUNIA DEAL

Thursday, May 20th, 2010

by Marc Roseblade

Arsene Wenger is willing to sell Fabregas, but who can fill the void?

Barcelona keep inching closer and closer to signing Arsenal and Spain international, Cesc Fabregas.

Fabregas is believed to have had an emotional face to face conversation with his current manager Arsene Wenger, pleading to be allowed to return to the team he grew up with and if recent reports emanating from the Nou Camp are to interpreted correctly, Swedish striker Zlatan Ibrahimovich is to be offered as a makeweight in the transfer.

After signing David Villa from Valencia, who is likely to be paraded before the press and media tomorrow, Friday, Fabregas is top of the list of new players that the newly crowned La Liga champions wish to have playing for them next season.

Valencia may also lose another of their major stars to the Catalan giants as David Silva is also being chased. Barcelona already look like they are trying to establish a Spainish contingent in their team that would hopefully win the Champions League Final next season after falling in this years semi final to Inter Milan.

They have started looking toward next season early and want to tie players down before they head to the World Cup, thereby avoiding the scramble for players after the tournament finishes in July. Smart thinking from the Spanish title winners as tournaments such as this always create a false perspective of players and raise transfer fees to ridiculous levels. Not that Barça are short of a few Euros, but smart all the same.

TITLE HOPES FADING FOR GUNNERS

Thursday, April 15th, 2010

The whole world seems to be in agreement about Wenger’s decision to start RvP later (than sooner) in the game.   It was a tough loss for the Gunners and a good win for Spurs.  Regardless of the result, van Persie showed us that he was, at least for last night, the best player on the field.

MAN UNITED VS ARSENAL

Saturday, January 30th, 2010

By Jake Glavies

Fabregas, Rooney, Bendtner, Berbatov and Gallas are just a few of the names that will highlight this weekend’s clash of Premier League heavyweights, as Manchester United travels to Emirates Stadium to face Arsenal.

Though there’s still a long road ahead – and a handful of teams vying for the top spot in the Premier League – the winner of the match could possibly be the one hoisting the league title at season’s end. A key match-up to watch will be the play of United’s defense against the Gunners attack, featuring Cesc Fabregas, Andrei Arshavin and, most likely, Nicklas Bendtner who fills in for van Persie and newly injured Eduardo.

United will be without stalwart defender Rio Ferdinand, who received a four match ban Thursday for striking Hull City forward Craig Fagan during Manchester’s 4-0 win Sunday.
The defensive unit has been under fire lately and aside from bringing Chris Smalling in from Fulham – which won’t help the team’s cause until next season – Sir Alex Ferguson has done little to alleviate the problems at the back.

Goalkeeper Edwin Van Der Sar will have to be at the top of his game, as Arsenal’s front line will surely put the pressure on him. But if his recent performances are any indication, the lanky Dutchman should be up to the test, recording 25 saves and four clean sheets – three of which have come in the last two months – in just seven league matches this season. The player to watch Sunday will be stationed in the opposite goal, though. Gunners’ keeper Manuel Almunia could be in for a world of hurt if William Gallas and Sol Campbell aren’t fit for the task of defending Wayne Rooney and the languid Dimitar Berbatov.

With a match too close to call on either end of the pitch, it may be up to the men in the middle to snatch a victory. Fielding one of the best midfield units in the Premier League, Arsenal will hold the advantage over United. Manchester was built from the ends in and if Sunday’s match turns into a battle at mid-field, the Red Devils are bound to fall apart after 90 minutes in London.

Who do you think has the edge?

JAY-Z IS A GOONER!

Monday, January 25th, 2010

Jay-Z has publicly professed his allegiance to Arsenal.

Sporting a freshly pressed Fabregas jersey, Jay was quoted in The Sun saying the following,

“I want (the Arsenal team) to party in New York, my city. I will look after them and make sure that they have some amazing nights out…The next time I’m playing in England I would like the Arsenal players to come and watch my gig and then come backstage afterwards.

“I know how hard professional sportsmen work so I want to offer an incentive for the guys.”

Any chance he’ll throw down for an ownership stake?

PREMIER LEAGUE HIGHLIGHTS: DECEMBER 30th, 2009

Thursday, December 31st, 2009

England team manager Fabio Capello recently criticized Manchester United for having lost their winning edge. Upon hearing the news of Capello’s remarks, Sir Alex Ferguson lashed out, dismissing the criticism and making a point that United are now a team of goal scorers. Yesterday’s clash was proof that Ferguson knows what he’s talking about. Losing Ronaldo given young players a chance to attack the goal and benefit from a team-oriented approach to chance creation. Check out highlights from the 5-0 romping.

And then there was red hot Arsenal…

Wenger’s boys came off of a 3-0 win and proved, yet again, that the Gunners will survive (and thrive) without RVP and Fabregas. It’s looking like Diaby has taken more responsibility on the pitch. Always fun to watch real Gunner football.

HOLY ARSHAVIN!

Sunday, December 13th, 2009

Picture 37

Arsenal’s Andrei Arshavin is one of the most entertaining goal scorers on earth and today’s game-winner against Liverpool competes for goal of the week.

Arsene Wenger’s boys are going to be OK, but change is imminent at Liverpool.  The Reds started strong (Kuyt had moments of brilliance) and then, with the own goal, they imploded.

And WHY was Xabi Alonso back to watch his old team suffer?  (Why did he leave in the first place?)  Mascherano wasn’t bringing much to the game and Aquilani was even less effective.  Reflecting on the game as a whole, there doesn’t seem to be a dialogue between Torres and his supporting crew.  As for Benitez, we’ve respectfully decided not to join the angry mob.  The best we can say for him is NOTHING AT ALL.

FABREGAS LINKED TO INTER SWAP

Tuesday, November 24th, 2009

60408_hp

Cesc Fabregas cleared the air of Barca rumors last week when he publicly voiced a desire to stay at Arsenal for the long haul. This week, rumor has Fabregas going to Inter Milan in a clean swap for Mario Balotelli. No official statements have been issued from either organization, though Wenger is said to be as fond of Balotelli at striker as Mourinho is of Fabregas at midfield. Wenger is hardly the type to act desperately under pressure, but he may have a plan for Balotelli. These gambles make the game exciting.

There is also a slight chance that Wenger is getting ready leave Arsenal. That would seem like the only circumstance under-which Cesc would hit the road, unless he just wants to win the Champions League and a Serie A league title. We’ll know if this is all a big nothing by mid-week.

What do you think?

Tomorrow’s match against relegation-bound Wolverhampton will give 3rd place Arsenal (22 pts) a chance to shake off any lingering imperfections as 1st place Chelsea (27 pts) take on 2nd place Man United (25 pts) in what will surely be a clash of two in-form titans.  But where is Arsenal headed this season?  We say up.  (more…)

GOAL OF THE WEEK – FABREGAS GUNNS ‘EM DOWN

Cesc Fabregas

Arsenal’s second goal against Tottenham this weekend has earned CESC FABREGAS a ONELOVE salute.

In a one-man display akin to vintage Maradonna or, in terms that may resonate with younger audiences, something out of FIFA 10, Fabregas cranked it up to ELEVEN.  As Tottenham shook off Van Persie’s 1st goal, Fabregas rushed an unsuspecting Wilson Palacios milliseconds after kick-off, reclaimed the ball and wove his way through an entire Hotspur defense, finishing seamlessly before anyone could figure out what had just happened.  It was something to behold.
