FA CUP TRIUMPH FOR CHELSEA

Saturday, May 15th, 2010

Chelsea bounced back from a disappointing Champions League campaign this year, winning the Premiership and the FA cup for the first time in club history. They are now one of 7 clubs to ever claim the FA Cup double. Not a bad deal for manager Carlo Ancelotti in his first season.

Chelsea controlled the first half, but couldn’t manage to find the net. In the second half, Portsmouth began to dominate the game, but their momentum slowed when Boateng had a penalty shot blocked by Mr Golden Gloves himself. It was 1-0 to Chelsea in the end, thanks to a set piece goal from Drogba.

Considering Chelsea’s form and Pompey’s laundry list of troubles, it was a respectable result.

SAHA PROPELS EVERTON PAST CHELSEA

Saha Celebrates w/ teammates/photo credit: Reuters

Everton created a blip on the radar a couple months ago when Louis Saha started scoring goals. Things got complicated, injuries came, and Everton sunk. And then…they bounced back. We can’t credit Donovan with the turn-around (Cahill and Saha are playing like champions), but his arrival couldn’t have come at a more opportune time.

Yesterday’s 2-1 victory over Chelsea can be credited to a strong Everton midfield and a show of striking brilliance from an in-form Saha.

As for the Chelsea defender that we all love to hate (hate is a strong word, but he is a spoiled brat), it’s been confirmed that Ashley Cole’s ankle is fractured. The defender will miss the majority of this season and may be pushed down the roster for South Africa. Without Cole on defense, John Terry will have his hands full.

There is only one direction that Chelsea can go at this point. Drogba may be able to keep the team’s title hopes alive, but it’s looking doubtful after the Everton loss.

Without further ado, here are your highlights…

PREMIERE LEAGUE VIDEO HIGHLIGHTS: CHELSEA vs FULHAM

Monday, December 28th, 2009

Picture 30

Fulham came out swinging today with a goal from Gera that went unanswered until Drogba equalized in the 73rd minute.  Chris Smalling conceded an own goal for Fulham, which gave Chelsea an undeserved 3 points on the day.  Gera’s goal was most certainly the highlight of the match.

IVORY COAST STILL A THREAT SANS DROGBA

Thursday, November 19th, 2009

Picture 2

Among the underdog teams headed for SA 2010, none seems to be as dangerous as the Ivory Coast. Today’s match with Germany proved that the African squad could hold their own without their national treasure, Didier Drogba, in the lineup. Talk of infighting suggested that Salomon Kalou would sit out for discplinary reasons, though he found his way onto the pitch. And even Kalou, certainly the second-highest profile player in the country, seemed to be swept up in a team-oriented display that had no real use for extravagance. They were at times a completely cohesive unit.

It’s difficult to judge the German squad so close to the loss of Robert Enke. When they play well, there is no stopping them. But it’s also not fair to make excuses for a team of their quality. They managed to pull off a draw against a formidable opponent. There is no telling which of these teams will have the bigger impact in South Africa, but it was interesting to seem them square off.
