WEEKEND REVIEW: THE PREMIERSHIP

Sunday, August 29th, 2010

Yesterday in Los Angeles, faithful soccer heads were brewing coffee at 4:15 in the morning to see midday matches in Europe and didn’t unplug until around 9:30 pm, when the final whistle blew at the Home Depot Center.

We’ll begin with the Premiership…

Theo Walcott remedied our heavy eyelids with a stunning display of speed, followed by a masterful finish. That was around 5am on the west coast. Blackburn fought hard, equalized, and ultimately lost to a game-winner by a much improved Andrei Arshavin. It’s too early to tell, but we see Blackburn finishing mid-table. The Gunners are looking like a top-4 squad.

Wayne Rooney made his debut against West Ham and scored a classy penalty, nearly faking the boots off of Matthew Greene. The scrappy #10 did enough to show us that he will be on point this season, but our EPL goals of the day came from Nani and Berbatov, respectively.

Wigan, a last place team from a town famous for its rugby, fought hard for a 1-0 victory over Spurs. As far as psychological boosts go, Wigan takes the cake. It was less than a year ago that the club agreed to refund fans after a 9-1 thrashing by Redknapp’s boys. As for Tottenham, we believe there is still hope for a top 4 or 5 finish. If Redknapp is able to work Gallas into his defensive and achieves some balance between Champions League duties and the team’s EPL pursuits, there is hope. We’ve also got a North London derby ahead of us in the Carling Cup race, as Tottenham face Arsenal in the 3rd round.

Chelsea ran through Stoke City with goals from Malouda and Drogba. Cynics are waiting to see Ancelotti’s crew face a ‘real’ opponent, but we have to be realistic. This is most dangerous team in the Premiership.

Andy Carroll racked up another goal for Newcastle in a draw with Wolverhampton, which will fuel debate over his future with the English national squad.

Today we saw Aston Villa’s Luke Young score with a slow arcing FIFA style chip against Everton. Despite dominating possession in the 2nd half, Everton could not finish for the life of them. Seamus Coleman, a late sub for the Toffees, is our player of note. He has the sort of speed and creativity that Everton lacked in the opening 60 minutes of play.

Darren Bent gave Sunderland a 1-0 win over Manchester City in stoppage time. This is not a big surprise if you consider Sunderland’s early season record at home in years past.

Lastly, Fernando Torres scored his 50th goal at Anfield, which resulted in another L for newly promoted West Brom.

We’ve got a couple weeks before the EPL picks up again, thanks to international friendlies.  Who do you support in England and how are you feeling about the the first three weeks?

ARSHAVIN WANTS MORE STARS AT ARSENAL

Wednesday, March 24th, 2010

The Arsenal rumor mill was operating at full capacity today.

First off, Jay-Z may buy a stake in the Gunners.  Whether a move like this would benefit Jay (or the sport itself ) in any way is a complete mystery, but it’s worth a shot.

And then we had Andrey Arshavin going public about the squad’s lack of star power.  In an interview with The Sun, Arshavin said -

“Without the variety of players we have less diversity in attack. That allows our opponents to read our combinations more easily. Finally, it results in less ball possession for us and our defense comes under more pressure.”

Arshavin is one of the most effective attacking midfielders on earth.  Like Fabregas, he is the Arsenal philosophy personified.  Will management hear his plea?  Will fresh money from Jay-Z be the answer to Wenger’s talent problem?  Lastly, IS there a shortage of talent at Arsenal?

P. DIDDY INTENT ON CRYSTAL PALACE TAKEOVER

Sunday, March 21st, 2010

Crystal Palace is one of England’s storied clubs, though it’s been a while since they made any noise at the highest level.  Bound for relegation into the 3rd tier of English football, Crystal Palace may have found an unlikely savior.

Diddy runs a progressive marketing empire.  If he brings this team back to the Premiership in 5 years, spends on big talent and brands the team as his own, he stands to create another global sports franchise.  Makes sense.

Why did he not choose to invest in the MLS?  Too rigid.  And maybe he just likes the name ‘Crystal Palace’.  Do you blame him?

As European clubs sink deeper into debt, marketing wizards and entertainers (like P. Diddy) will swoop down with a few million dollars and some new branding strategies for old clubs.  This could actually be a good thing for American soccer in the long run.

PREMIER LEAGUE VIDEO HIGHLIGHTS: EVERTON vs SUNDERLAND

Sunday, December 27th, 2009

Picture 10

Sunderland’s City of Light stadium was filled with almost 50,000 spectators for today’s meeting with Everton.  Both teams have had moments of brilliance this season, though both have struggled in the past few weeks.

Darren Bent’s first half goal for Sunderland could only be matched by Marouane Fellaini’s equalizer in the second half.  Everton’s star forward Louis Saha was completely silenced by Ghanaian international Mensah for almost every minute of the match.  It was Fellaini’s through passing at midfield and physical dominance inside the 18 that saved Everton from a bad loss.  Both teams should be happy with a point.

It will be so much fun to see Landon Donovan work with Fellaini, Cahill, and Saha on the Everton offense in February.

PREMIER LEAGUE VIDEO HIGHLIGHTS: WEST HAM vs CHELSEA

Monday, December 21st, 2009

This was a great performance from West Ham, despite a wrongly judged penalty that saw Frank Lampard equalize from 12 yards.  It ended at 1-1. Chelsea lucked out and it became perfectly clear that West Ham is bound for a huge comeback in the new year.

Without Michael Essien, Chelsea is simply NOT the team they have been all season.

WEEKEND PREVIEW

Friday, December 18th, 2009

Picture 54

We’ve got huge games to look forward to this weekend.

Tomorrow’s big fixture will be the Club World Cup final featuring FC Barcelona and Argentina’s own Estudiantes de la Plata.  Barça are the favored side, though Estudiantes are sure to put up a serious fight.  More importantly, any statistician will tell you that NO game can be won or lost before it is actually played.  Lucky for us.

Milan face Fiorentina.  These two Champions League survivors are fighting for advancement on the league charts.

Chelsea square off against West Ham in a roudy London derby.  Man United will host Dempesey and Zamora as Fulham work to establish a comeback in the premiership.  Jozy Altidore’s Hull City are playing a newly confident Arsenal, and Man City play host to Sunderland.  Oh, and Liverpool have Portsmouth (no telling where that one will go).

PREMIER LEAGUE HIGHLIGHTS: WOLVERHAMPTON vs MAN UNITED

Wednesday, December 16th, 2009

Picture 47

Wolves fans are calling out for a refund on their tickets to yesterday’s match. Wolves coach McCarthy made the odd decision to replace his entire starting line (aside from US goalkeeper Marcus Hahnemann) from the upset win against Tottenham. You are looking at second string Wolves against Man United’s best.

It was a 3-0 thrashing in United’s favor.  McCarthy’s explanation is that he wanted to conserve top players for the weekend.  In all fairness, Bolton is next and Wolves need to be their best against mid-tier opponents.  Conceding games to league-leaders is sometimes necessary for clubs on the brink of relegation.  Wolves can avoid demotion if they stay focused.
