MANCHESTER CITY: Breaking into the Top 4

Friday, February 5th, 2010

By Jake Glavies

Manchester City will be in prime position to leap into fourth place in the Premier League Saturday, as Wayne Bridge and Joleon Lescott will make their return to the line-up during the trip to Hull City.

Both players have been out of action for around two months after suffering knee injuries just one week apart. Bridge went down Dec. 5 against Chelsea and Lescott at Bolton Dec. 12. With the defenders sidelined, City won five of its last seven matches, but suffered key losses against Tottenham, 3-0, and Everton, 2-0. While Lescott will be on the bench to start the match, Bridge will be in the starting line-up. He and fellow defender Kolo Toure will attempt to clamp down on a Hull City attack that’s managed just 23 goals this season.

Roberto Mancini couldn’t have gotten the defensive duo back at a better time. With the next three matches coming against teams in the bottom half of the league, Mancini will have a chance to get Bridge and Lescott back into the swing of things before facing Liverpool, Chelsea and Tottenham in successive weeks. So far this season, City is 1-1-1 against the three, with a goal differential of minus 2.

If Mancini’s squad is to move up the league standings, it’ll need a bit of help this weekend. Currently sitting sixth – just a point behind Liverpool and two behind Spurs – City could jump into the top four with a win over Hull City and losses or draws by its two nearest competitors. The Reds will face Everton, a squad that’s gone 4-0-5 since losing its last match Nov. 29 to Liverpool. Meanwhile, Spurs will face Aston Villa and Gabriel Agbonlahor – who is coming off a two goal performance at Fulham.

Both squads will have their work cut out for them if they want to keep their place in the league and hold off a newly restocked City team. Manchester will get another boost as the newly acquired Patrick Vieira could make his long awaited debut.

JOHNSON, KEANE AMONG TOP TRANSFERS AS WINDOW CLOSES

Monday, February 1st, 2010

By Jake Glavies

The Premier League transfer window closed with a slight thud rather than a bang today.

The biggest true transfer of the day came as Manchester City brought in former England U-21 winger Adam Johnson from Middlesbrough. Johnson, who’s scored 11 goals in 25 English League Championship matches this season, was widely regarded in England as one of the best players not playing in the Premier League. The move cost City a reported $11 million; Johnson will be under contract until 2014.

At just 22 years old, Johnson still has a lot of growing to do. Playing under the tutelage of Roberto Mancini should help expedite his maturation. That being said, Johnson will have to fight for every minute he gets at City.

In the hopes of making a push for the Championship playoffs, Middlesbrough took to the Scottish Premier League, bringing in strikers Scott McDonald of Celtic and Lee Miller of Aberdeen. The pair will bring experience and power to The Boro, combining for 197 league appearances and 79 goals.

Victor Moses will also make the move from the Championship to the top flight, as he jumps from Crystal Palace to Wigan on a three-and-a-half year contract. The forward had been linked with a number of notable European clubs, including Arsenal and Barcelona, but at just 19 years old, Moses may have been viewed as too inexperienced to make such a move. So far this season he’s turned in six goals in 18 appearances. Midfielder Marcelo Moreno also joined the team on a loan deal Monday.

In what could be the final move of his career, 32-year-old Benni McCarthy made the switch from Blackburn Rovers to West Ham for an undisclosed fee. The South African will look to regain his form with the Hammers leading up to this summer’s World Cup.

The most notable loan deal of the day came when Robbie Keane – who has fallen out of favor at Tottenham and also lost his starting job to Peter Crouch – signed to move to Celtic until the end of the season. After leaving Spurs for a short stay at Liverpool, Keane rejoined Harry Redknapp’s squad but couldn’t regain the form that led to some 80 goals in 200 appearances at White Hart Lane. Keane will be joined by other transfer day signings Diomansy Kamara, Edson Braafheid and Paul Slane.

Other moves on transfer day included: Spurs defender Alan Hutton to Sunderland on-loan for the rest of the season; West Ham inks Leeds striker Mido to loan deal and also signs AS Saint-Etienne’s Ilan.

MAN UNITED VS ARSENAL

Saturday, January 30th, 2010

By Jake Glavies

Fabregas, Rooney, Bendtner, Berbatov and Gallas are just a few of the names that will highlight this weekend’s clash of Premier League heavyweights, as Manchester United travels to Emirates Stadium to face Arsenal.

Though there’s still a long road ahead – and a handful of teams vying for the top spot in the Premier League – the winner of the match could possibly be the one hoisting the league title at season’s end. A key match-up to watch will be the play of United’s defense against the Gunners attack, featuring Cesc Fabregas, Andrei Arshavin and, most likely, Nicklas Bendtner who fills in for van Persie and newly injured Eduardo.

United will be without stalwart defender Rio Ferdinand, who received a four match ban Thursday for striking Hull City forward Craig Fagan during Manchester’s 4-0 win Sunday.
The defensive unit has been under fire lately and aside from bringing Chris Smalling in from Fulham – which won’t help the team’s cause until next season – Sir Alex Ferguson has done little to alleviate the problems at the back.

Goalkeeper Edwin Van Der Sar will have to be at the top of his game, as Arsenal’s front line will surely put the pressure on him. But if his recent performances are any indication, the lanky Dutchman should be up to the test, recording 25 saves and four clean sheets – three of which have come in the last two months – in just seven league matches this season. The player to watch Sunday will be stationed in the opposite goal, though. Gunners’ keeper Manuel Almunia could be in for a world of hurt if William Gallas and Sol Campbell aren’t fit for the task of defending Wayne Rooney and the languid Dimitar Berbatov.

With a match too close to call on either end of the pitch, it may be up to the men in the middle to snatch a victory. Fielding one of the best midfield units in the Premier League, Arsenal will hold the advantage over United. Manchester was built from the ends in and if Sunday’s match turns into a battle at mid-field, the Red Devils are bound to fall apart after 90 minutes in London.

Who do you think has the edge?

EVERTON IDEAL FOR DONOVAN

Thursday, January 28th, 2010

With a goal and an assist to his name, Donovan has earned the ‘USA’ chants that bellow from Everton’s faithful during the team’s EPL resurgence.

Here’s Everton vs Sunderland.  LD bags his first of many goals in English football, pushing the envelope for American’s abroad and making us all damn proud.

The real question is, will he honor the 10 week loan or extend it? I say it get’s pushed into next season. Thoughts?

BACK ON TOP

Sunday, January 24th, 2010

By Jake Glavies

Though decimated by injuries on the defensive side, Manchester United has still found a way to the top of the Premier League standings – a feat, due in large part, to the play of striker Wayne Rooney.

Currently leading the league in goals with 19, the 24 year old has been the bright spot Sir Alex Ferguson has desperately needed this season. Currently, Jermain Defoe, Darren Bent and Didier Drogba are second in the Premier League with 14 goals each.

By dispatching Carlos Tevez and Cristiano Ronaldo this past summer, Ferguson put all his money on Rooney to lead the team. And boy has it paid off.

After playing second fiddle to Ronaldo for his entire career, the Liverpool native has finally become the centerpiece of the Manchester offense. Through just 22 games, Rooney has already eclipsed his past scoring mark of 16 goals set in the 2005-06 season. A four-goal performance in a 4-0 thrashing of Hull City Saturday helped elevate him from one of England’s best, to one of the world’s best – and rumor has it, a new $140 million contract is soon to follow. The stout striker did most of his damage in the second half against the Tigers, scoring three goals in the final eight minutes to seal the victory at Old Trafford.

With matches at Arsenal and Aston Villa set for the coming weeks though, Rooney will need more help at the back if he’s to keep Manchester in the top spot – a place it hasn’t been since November. The return of defender Rio Ferdinand will surely help the squad’s cause, but an end to the drama surrounding stellar center back Namanja Vidic is also a must if the team is to push ahead. Rumors of a summer departure to Barcelona – coupled with Vidic’s mysterious ailment prior to a clash with Leeds – have left United’s defense in limbo.

Despite the early-season question marks surrounding Rooney’s ability to lead United and the current issues at his back, he’s found a way to be the man at the Theatre of Dreams. Something Manchester supporters are truly happy to see.

MUSICAL CHAIRS AT THE TOP OF THE TABLE

Saturday, January 23rd, 2010

Before we had a chance to get comfy with Arsenal in 1st place, the Red Devils came through like gangbusters.

As an American, I can’t get too excited about seeing Jozy Altidore’s side get pummeled by ONE Wayne Rooney. Then again, we can’t deny a brilliant performance. 4 goals for Rooney in a 4-0 sweep had EVERYONE on the edge of their seat. Without further ado, here are the highlights….
