BARCELONA DOES IT AGAIN

Saturday, December 19th, 2009

FC Barcelona has won the Club World Cup in UAE.  Some may be surprised that they couldn’t win by a more decisive margin, but today’s 2-1 result is not unusual.

First off, Estudiantes is a world class club. They could compete in any league on earth.  Secondly, Barça is not immune to first-half goals by unfamiliar teams. It happened with Atlante and it happened today.

Barça took their time adjusting to the opposition until Pedro subbed in to equalized at 89 minutes.  Messi came through with a by-any-means-necessary (and still beautiful) goal in the 110th minute.  Barça is the first team in history to win six out of the six major club trophies in a single year.

WEEKEND PREVIEW

Friday, December 18th, 2009

Picture 54

We’ve got huge games to look forward to this weekend.

Tomorrow’s big fixture will be the Club World Cup final featuring FC Barcelona and Argentina’s own Estudiantes de la Plata.  Barça are the favored side, though Estudiantes are sure to put up a serious fight.  More importantly, any statistician will tell you that NO game can be won or lost before it is actually played.  Lucky for us.

Milan face Fiorentina.  These two Champions League survivors are fighting for advancement on the league charts.

Chelsea square off against West Ham in a roudy London derby.  Man United will host Dempesey and Zamora as Fulham work to establish a comeback in the premiership.  Jozy Altidore’s Hull City are playing a newly confident Arsenal, and Man City play host to Sunderland.  Oh, and Liverpool have Portsmouth (no telling where that one will go).

CLUB WORLD CUP VIDEO HIGHLIGHTS: ESTUDIANTES vs POHANG STEELERS

Pohang Steelers were eliminated today in a 2-1 loss to Argentina’s Estudiantes de la Plata. The Korean squad was reduced to 8 men after 6 yellow cards and 3 reds had been issued by a now-unpopular ref.

While FC Barcelona are favorites to win the tournament, Estudiantes Manager Alejandro Sabella is confident that his boys can give the Spanish squad a run for their money. With Messi, Ibra, Xavi, and Iniesta all in peak health, it will take an act of god to stop the Blaugrana (if they can beat Atlante and make to the finals, that is).
