FORLAN FLOORS FULHAM

Thursday, May 13th, 2010

by Marc Roseblade

Athletico Madrid won European silverware for the first time last night with a 2-1 extra time win over English side Fulham.

The Spanish side waited until the 116th minute to score the winning goal and reap heartache on the Fulham players and fans.

Atlético Madrid celebrate in the Spanish capital

Diego Forlan, who had a troubled time at Old Trafford when he played for Manchester United, seems to relish playing against English opponents. He tormented Liverpool in the semi-finals and did a bit of the same against Fulham last night, scoring both goals in the 2-1 win. The Uruguayan striker now heads into the World Cup with a golden Europa League medal hanging from his neck.

Forlan’s 2nd goal seemed to take a deflection past the London side’s goalkeeper and was a crushing end to the game for Roy Hodgson and his players whose credibility has risen to new levels with this European cup run.

Athletico dominated the game as Fulham struggled to reach their form from previous rounds and even their talisman Bobby Zamora, who was struggling with injury, had to be substituted early in the 2nd half. It looks like surgery (and not a last minute Capello call-up) is imminent for Zamora.

Atlético’s players arrived home at 06.40CET to face hundreds of screaming fans who had waited all night for a glimpse of their heroes. After a deserved rest, the squad mounted an open-top bus at the gates of the Vicente Calderón for a long procession through the streets of Madrid. Thousands of fans lined the route that would eventually lead to the Neptune fountain, the site where Los Colchoneros traditionally celebrate.

Its been 48 years since Los Rojiblancos’ last European victory and with the team they have, few will doubt that it won’t be as long until the next one.

The Fulham marksman has earned his stripes this season and many are wondering when he’ll get his call up for international duty.

If Fulham can bring a Europa League championship home to Craven Cottage, there’s a good chance that we’ll see Zamora join the likes of Gerrard, Lampard, and Rooney in South Africa.

AROUND THE WORLD: Dynamo Kyiv

Tuesday, March 9th, 2010

By Jake Glavies

For years Dynamo Kyiv’s success was buried behind a red wall of Soviet silence. One of the most decorated clubs in Eastern Europe, Dynamo is also one of soccer’s best kept secrets.

Now playing in the Ukrainian Premier League, and formerly in the Soviet Top League, the squad has brought home 12 Ukrainian league titles – more than any other team – nine Ukrainian Cups, 13 USSR Championships and nine USSR Cups.

After the Ukraine was freed from Soviet rule in 1990, professional soccer began just two years later. Dynamo has been involved in every championship match since the league’s inception in 1992. Though they finished as runners-up to Tavriya Simferopol during the inaugural season, they went on to dominant for years to come. Winning nine straight titles from 1993-2001, the Bilo-Syni became the most dominant force in Eastern Europe. In recent years, the team also managed to make it to the Champions League quarterfinals in 1998 and the semifinals in 1999.

Dynamo suffered through its longest title drought when they finished second during the 2005 and ’06 seasons when nemesis Shakhtar Donetsk took home the title. Kyiv also gave up the title to the Hirnyky in 2008, before again claiming victory in 2009.

Through the years Dynamo has seen a number of quality players come through its ranks. During the Soviet days, Oleg Blokhin was the pride of Kyiv. Suiting up for the Bilo-Syni from 1969-1988, Blokhin was the squad’s shining star. With 432 Soviet Top League appearances and 211 goals, both of which are more than any other player in league history, Blokhin helped lead Dynamo to 10 titles of various kinds. He also became the first Ukrainian born player to win the Balloon d’Or, when he took home the honor in 1975.

Just over 10 years later though, Dynamo would find a new savior, as Ihor Belanov was named European Footballer of the Year in 1986.  More recently, Andriy Shevchanko has become the face of Kyiv.  Beginning his professional career with the club in 1994, he was behind much of the team’s early Ukrainian league success.  Shevchenko netted 60 goals in 117 appearances during his five-year stay with the team. After spending time with Milan, where he won the Ballon d’Or in 2004, and Chelsea, he returned to Dynamo in 2009 after signing a two-year deal.

Currently, Dynamo Kyiv holds a slim two-point lead over Shakhtar Donetsk in the league standings.

AROUND THE WORLD: Benfica

Thursday, February 25th, 2010

By Jake Glavies

In a country with a population smaller than that of Los Angeles or New York, a former football power is plotting its return to glory.

Situated in the Portuguese capital of Lisbon, Benfica – one of the most decorated teams of the 1960s – has claimed a league-leading 31 Portuguese Liga titles, but has recently fallen on tough times. But in its heyday, it was known as a giant slayer. During an era when Real Madrid had won five-straight European Champions’ Cups, now known as the Champions League, spanning from 1955-60, Benfica was the first to knock the Spanish giant from its lofty perch. In 1961, tiny Benfica claimed the first of two-straight European Champions’ Cups, beating Barcelona to claim the title of best in Europe. The following year the Eagles managed to top Madrid in the finals to win their last European title.

Throughout the rest of the decade, Benfica continued its push for greatness. Making it to the European Cup finals in 1963, ’65 and ’68, the Lisbon squad was one of the top clubs of its day. And it was reflected in the company it kept. After downing Barcelona and Real Madrid in its two cup victories, Benfica clashed with such giants as Milan (1963), Inter (1965) and Manchester United (1968) before the golden age in Lisbon came to a close. By the time the decade was over, the squad had added eight Portuguese Liga titles and three Portuguese Cups to its haul.

The Eagles soared to the top of the soccer ranks on the back of the legendary Eusebio. As the only Benfica player to ever win the Ballon d’Or (1965) and European Golden Boot Awards (1968, 1973), it was Eusebio that carried the club to greatness. Often overlooked in the annals of soccer history, he managed to score an astonishing 727 goals in 715 career matches. He helped Benfica to four more Liga titles and two Portuguese Cups before leaving the club in 1975.

Benfica managed to reach the European Cup final twice in the late 1980s, but after Eusebio left the squad became a shell of its former self. Not only did it drop out of the European scene, but it was struggling to be the best in its own country. Winning just 10 league titles since 1975, with the most recent coming in 2004, the Eagles have given way to rival club Porto. Benfica may have been the class of the Liga in the past, but it’s Porto leading the way now – winning six of the last seven league titles and 24 overall.

The squad has reason to be hopeful of a turnaround, though. Through 20 matches this season, new manager Jorge Jesus has the Eagles back on top of the Liga table. Led by talented players such as Oscar Cardozo, 16 goals, and goalkeeper Quim – who’s allowed just 10 scores this season with 11 clean sheets – the future is looking very bright for Benfica.
