THE BEST OF EUROPE: Champions League Draw for Final 8

Friday, March 19th, 2010

Now it get’s interesting.  Here are the Quarter-final matchups:

- Arsenal vs Barcelona –   These teams met in the UCL final back in 2006.  It’ll be the first time that Frabregas, a former Barça youth star, will make a visiting appearance at the Nou Camp.  This is the battle that I’ve been waiting for;  two very self-aware squads with brilliant leadership.  It’ll be like a game of chess.

- Manchester United vs Bayern Munich.  This should go United’s way, but it’s impossible to tell.  Both are in tip-top form.

- Inter Milan vs CSKA Moskva.  Smart money is on Inter.

- Lyon vs Bordeaux.  A tough call.  Lyon are in 5th behind 1st place Bordeaux in the Ligue 1, but they only trail by 2 points.  Bordeaux may have a slight edge, but either side could make it to the final.

BLACK CATS HOSTING GUNNERS

Unless Gerrard hits the ground running against Manchester City, we predict that Sunderland-Arsenal will be the match of the weekend. Van Persie’s injury triggered a reshuffling of the Gunners’ offense, though the team is hardly short on in-form talent. Newly contracted Eduardo will be the tip of the spear, while Arshavin and Fabregas are expected to continue taking shots (and scoring) from all over.

Wenger’s men are undefeated in 13 games, though nothing is certain going into Sunderland. First of all, they are without van Persie and it’s hard to tell how this will affect the team’s morale. We think it will not be major factor, but time will tell. Secondly, they are not accustomed to winning up north. It’s colder and harsher, which makes for a tougher, more adaptable Sunderland squad. Finally, Sunderland were victorious against Liverpool and drew at Old Trafford, and seem to have boatloads of confidents heading into today’s fixture. Stay tuned.

IMAGINE WENGER AT REAL MADRID?

Arsene Wenger is willing to quit his job if mining & lumber magnate Alisher Usmanov succeeds in buying a majority stake in the Gunners. The celebrated manager does not agree with Usmanov’s ideas on how the club should be developed. Stan Kroenke, the American billionaire who already owns 29%, has made it clear that he would not enforce changes to the squad if he were to buy a majority stake. Wenger has agreed to stay on board if Kroenke steps in with a takeover bid.

Wenger has brought the sport to new heights while at Arsenal and his departure would be a tremendous loss for the club. Then again, Arsenal’s loss is Madrid’s gain. If he left, Fabregas would most likely follow, and Wenger would have another career defining challenge on his hands. The man is prolific. He won the french league with Monaco in the 80’s and then moved directly to Arsenal where he would eventually claim the only undefeated season in Premier League history. So long as he can run the club his way, Wenger will remain the best manager on earth. If that means a move to Madrid, so be it.

GOAL OF THE WEEK – FABREGAS GUNNS ‘EM DOWN

Cesc Fabregas

Arsenal’s second goal against Tottenham this weekend has earned CESC FABREGAS a ONELOVE salute.

In a one-man display akin to vintage Maradonna or, in terms that may resonate with younger audiences, something out of FIFA 10, Fabregas cranked it up to ELEVEN.  As Tottenham shook off Van Persie’s 1st goal, Fabregas rushed an unsuspecting Wilson Palacios milliseconds after kick-off, reclaimed the ball and wove his way through an entire Hotspur defense, finishing seamlessly before anyone could figure out what had just happened.  It was something to behold.
