MOURINHO: INIESTA HAS NOT EARNED BALLON D’OR

Friday, September 3rd, 2010

By Alex Valhouli

Mourinho

La Liga correspondent Rick Minars brought this to my attention during pickup today…

Earlier this morning, the Italian news paper Gazzetta dello Sport published Jose Mourinho thoughts on who should win the Ballon d’or. Apparently Iniesta has now taken the lead to win the prize. Mourinho says, in his own words, that Andres Inesita might have scored the most important goal of the year (or the century?) in the World Cup final but he was injured for most of the long dueling European club season. Mourinho believes that if anyone should win the Ballon d’or it should be Wesley Sneijder. His other preferences are Diego Milito and Xaxi Hernandez, though he makes it clear that Sneijder is tops, followed by Xavi.

He made a point to say that Sneijder was no better than Iniesta, but that the dutch superstar simply had a better season and a great world cup. He concluded that Wesley is number one followed by Xaxi Hernandez.

Despite Mourinho’s bias (and my own bias toward Iniesta), I have to say that the man has a point. Milito wouldn’t have made my top 5, talented as he may be. What do you think?

CHAMPS LEAGUE: GROUP STAGE PREDICTIONS

Friday, August 27th, 2010

The Champions League group stage begins in about three weeks and we are scouring the ONELOVE community for predictions, opinions, and irrational arguments surrounding the upcoming round.  To get the ball rolling, we caught up with OLFC West teammates Darren Davies and Cameron Araghi.

Davies, an LA area club coach, says: ‘Chelsea will win it (slight bias). They’ve been together, relatively unchanged, for three years and they have depth. Barça could win, especially with the addition of Villa, and Real is pretty damn serious. Picking up Ozil was huge. And then Mourinho has the formula for success.’

Cameron Araghi, another ONELOVE Ambassador, chimes in: ‘I always say Barça.  They have the statistics.  They have an attack-minded forward in Villa and if Mascherano signs, they will be the best team on earth.  I see Real Madrid doing very well this year, but they will fall short in the major tournaments.  And I may be wrong, but something tells me that Rafa is going to ruin Inter.’

What do you say?  Who will surprise us this year?  Who will disappoint?

The group stage fixtures will take place in September (14/15, 28/29), October (19/20), November (2/3, 23/24), and wrap up in early December (7/8).

FABREGAS READY FOR CATALUNIA DEAL

Thursday, May 20th, 2010

by Marc Roseblade

Arsene Wenger is willing to sell Fabregas, but who can fill the void?

Barcelona keep inching closer and closer to signing Arsenal and Spain international, Cesc Fabregas.

Fabregas is believed to have had an emotional face to face conversation with his current manager Arsene Wenger, pleading to be allowed to return to the team he grew up with and if recent reports emanating from the Nou Camp are to interpreted correctly, Swedish striker Zlatan Ibrahimovich is to be offered as a makeweight in the transfer.

After signing David Villa from Valencia, who is likely to be paraded before the press and media tomorrow, Friday, Fabregas is top of the list of new players that the newly crowned La Liga champions wish to have playing for them next season.

Valencia may also lose another of their major stars to the Catalan giants as David Silva is also being chased. Barcelona already look like they are trying to establish a Spainish contingent in their team that would hopefully win the Champions League Final next season after falling in this years semi final to Inter Milan.

They have started looking toward next season early and want to tie players down before they head to the World Cup, thereby avoiding the scramble for players after the tournament finishes in July. Smart thinking from the Spanish title winners as tournaments such as this always create a false perspective of players and raise transfer fees to ridiculous levels. Not that Barça are short of a few Euros, but smart all the same.

THE ONELOVE STORY

Sunday, May 16th, 2010

I’m Alex. My job at ONELOVE is to create and sustain a social network for all of America’s, and eventually the world’s, most passionate soccer players, coaches, and fans.

My older brother Jamie is an artist and a graphic designer (JRV). We initially came up with the idea for ONELOVE while playing pickup soccer in different parts of Los Angeles in 2006.

*A few things worth knowing about Jamie that he probably wouldn’t tell you himself: He believes in people. He never asks permission. His creativity is fueled by something he calls the “beautiful struggle.”

How it got started…

Jamie had been coaching soccer and snowboarding in Vermont before planning a weekend visit to the west coast. I had already spent 2 years out of college working tirelessly to make a career in the movie business. I was lost. He convinced me that it was time to venture out into the city and find a game.

I had no interest in playing at first. Jamie decided to go out on his own, returning every night with stories about the people he was meeting; how they played and how they interacted with one another.

He told me about the languages they spoke. He even talked about how conflicts would arise between players and then be resolved almost instantly by a beautiful play.

This was better than a movie. I had to go and see for myself. I realized, after touching a ball, that I had been sabotaging myself in a frenzied attempt to be ‘somebody’.

After a couple months of daily pickup games, I had forgotten what was so important about racing through life. Jamie’s weekend trip turned into a 3 year stay.

It all started with the ONELOVE 10. Jamie sketched it out one day after a game and we began printing it on shirts and sporting them wherever we went. On the street, people would inquire about the meaning of the ONELOVE 10. On the field, no one really had to ask. It was an ideal and a fundamental observation about the power of the game to bring people together.

A little history…

While our mother taught us how to love, it was our father who showed us how the game was meant to be played. He was a Greek immigrant who captained a championship squad at Colby College and would never (EVER) hang up his boots for as long as he lived. He would also never stop learning, dancing, cooking, inspiring, laughing, and LIVING until his time was up in 1995.

A little farther back…

It was 1989 and our family had just moved to Barcelona from New Hampshire. We had been raised on soccer, but we hadn’t yet embraced it as OUR game.

We lived in a tiny apartment above a Chinese restaurant at Arimón y Muntaner. The TV was busted when we got there and nobody seemed to mind that it never got fixed. Within a matter of days, we enrolled at the TARR football school. We took family trips to Camp Nou and to Mallorca for beach soccer.

For play time, we met up with friends and teammates for street ball in front of our building and futbol sala (now futsal) at the basketball courts up the street.

We even stayed at the dusty fields after practice until hunger beckoned us home for Mom’s chicken and rice at the family table. Those were the Huck Finn years. They planted the seed that would become ONELOVE.

All preachy-ness aside…

If you’re passionate about something, you don’t really care where it takes you. ONELOVE has given me a sense of freedom that I never knew existed. Money can’t buy this kind of wealth. If you work too hard (or not hard enough) and are haunted by the idea of happiness, freedom, purpose, and human connections, go find a game. It’s worth a try.

Make your voice heard…

The ONELOVE story is about impressions and decisive moments. If you ever get a burst of inspiration, write it up, paint it, sketch it, sing it, shoot it, do whatever it is you do, and send it to alex@onelovesoccer.com. We want to hear what you have to say.

MESSI AND THE GOLDEN BOOT

Tuesday, May 4th, 2010

by Marc Roseblade

Barcelona’s Lionel Messi is closing in on Europe’s Golden Boot and, should the 22 year old win this, it will be added to the ‘FIFA World Player of the Year’ he has already won this season.

His amazing tally of goals has helped Barcelona to the highest points tally that Spain’s La Liga has ever seen and they still have 2 matches left to play.

The Spanish giants have averaged 3.6 goals per game this season with the Argentine striker scoring 31 league goals and an amazing 44 goals in total so far, but the league goals are the ones that count toward the coveted Golden Boot.

Goals scored in Europe’s top leagues like the Premier League, La Liga, Serie A and the Bundesliga are awarded 2 points and those in less prestigious leagues 1.5 points. This gives him 62 points in the race to be named Europe’s leading marksman.

Others chasing include Didier Drogba of Chelsea & Man Utd’s Wayne Rooney, who have both netted 26 times this season but only have 1 game left.

Real Madrid’s Higuaín has also scored 25 times giving him 50 points with 3 games left to play.

Can anyone stop Messi the maestro?

INTER HEAD FOR HALLOWED GROUND

Thursday, April 29th, 2010

The Special One does it again…

It was a hard-fought Champions League semi-final. Barcelona had opportunities to win, but couldn’t penetrate Mourinho’s defensive line for a second goal. We didn’t really see anything special from Barça until Pique scored brilliantly in the final 10 minutes of play. From there, you felt as if Xavi, Pique and Bojan would combine for something miraculous. It didn’t happen.

And now, Inter head to their first European final since 1972. They have a shot at winning their first European trophy since 1965.

BEST OF EUROPE: Barça Ambush Gunners in Historic Victory

Tuesday, April 6th, 2010

Messi became the first player in UEFA history to score 4 times in a single game as Barça knocked Arsenal out of the Champions League.

Arsenal actually played well, considering they had to play without Arshavin, Fabregas, Song, van Persie, and Gallas. A void was painfully evident as soon as Messi began scoring goals. That said, it was a deserved win for the Blaugrana, who have officially redefined the concept of ‘play beautiful’ in the new millenium.

Here are today’s highlights…

THE BEST OF EUROPE: Champions League Draw for Final 8

Friday, March 19th, 2010

Now it get’s interesting.  Here are the Quarter-final matchups:

- Arsenal vs Barcelona –   These teams met in the UCL final back in 2006.  It’ll be the first time that Frabregas, a former Barça youth star, will make a visiting appearance at the Nou Camp.  This is the battle that I’ve been waiting for;  two very self-aware squads with brilliant leadership.  It’ll be like a game of chess.

- Manchester United vs Bayern Munich.  This should go United’s way, but it’s impossible to tell.  Both are in tip-top form.

- Inter Milan vs CSKA Moskva.  Smart money is on Inter.

- Lyon vs Bordeaux.  A tough call.  Lyon are in 5th behind 1st place Bordeaux in the Ligue 1, but they only trail by 2 points.  Bordeaux may have a slight edge, but either side could make it to the final.
