BAFANA, BAFANA: What Happened?

Thursday, June 17th, 2010

by Philip Cramer

Bafana, Bafana, you broke my heart.

Where was the team that came alive against Mexico and almost beat them? Yesterday, that team was nowhere to be seen.  Yesterday, you looked like the team that is ranked 83rd by FIFA.  Yesterday, you proved why all the critics wrote you off before the World Cup even started.

It isn’t that you lost.  Uruguay showed us they are a very good team that played with discipline and commitment.  There is no shame in losing to a team that plays well.  The difference is that they played with passion and commitment, and you did not.

You were beaten to the ball too many times.  They ran you down from behind.  They fought harder and they showed heart.  I did not sense that from you, Bafana.

Siphiwe Tshablala, when you said before the game that Uruguay was in plenty of trouble, you stirred up a hornet’s nest.  It only inspires your opponent.

Perhaps the team was too confident. I confess that we were all confident.  The team played well in the games before the Cup, especially the last one, when you outplayed and beat a good Denmark side.  We all believed the low FIFA ranking was a reflection of the past, not of the present.

Coach Parreira, you blamed the referee after the game.  It was not the referee’s fault.  It was a penalty, even if Itumeleng Khune did not intend to foul.  It was unlucky because the tip of his foot accidentally caught Luis Suarez’s foot.  That is still a penalty, even though the red card was harsh.  What I cannot understand is why you made no changes in the lineup or the tactics when it was clear nothing was working.

South Africa is still proud of Bafana.  It is not over yet, and the team brought joy to a nation that has welcomed the rest of the world.  The country is sad but they are not upset.  We know you did your best on an emotional day for us—National Youth Day, when we remember those school children who stood tall and defiant in the face of police bullets to oppose an evil system.

South Africa is still new to international soccer and the team still has a lot to learn, but this will make Bafana stronger.  It isn’t over yet and we still have one game left.  It will be difficult to make it to the next round.  We have nothing to lose, so all I ask is that you find the heart and the ability that the team has. Even if we don’t advance, Bafana and the country will hold their heads high.

MESSI AND THE GOLDEN BOOT

Tuesday, May 4th, 2010

by Marc Roseblade

Barcelona’s Lionel Messi is closing in on Europe’s Golden Boot and, should the 22 year old win this, it will be added to the ‘FIFA World Player of the Year’ he has already won this season.

His amazing tally of goals has helped Barcelona to the highest points tally that Spain’s La Liga has ever seen and they still have 2 matches left to play.

The Spanish giants have averaged 3.6 goals per game this season with the Argentine striker scoring 31 league goals and an amazing 44 goals in total so far, but the league goals are the ones that count toward the coveted Golden Boot.

Goals scored in Europe’s top leagues like the Premier League, La Liga, Serie A and the Bundesliga are awarded 2 points and those in less prestigious leagues 1.5 points. This gives him 62 points in the race to be named Europe’s leading marksman.

Others chasing include Didier Drogba of Chelsea & Man Utd’s Wayne Rooney, who have both netted 26 times this season but only have 1 game left.

Real Madrid’s Higuaín has also scored 25 times giving him 50 points with 3 games left to play.

Can anyone stop Messi the maestro?

CRISTIANO RONALDO WINS PUSKAS AWARD – FIFA GOAL OF THE YEAR

Tuesday, December 22nd, 2009

Messi took home the top honors from FIFA, but CR9 (previous Fifa Player of the Year) became the first recipient of Fifa’s PUSKAS award.  Ronaldo, pictured above with the widow of Hungarian sensation and Real Madrid frontman Ferenc Puskas, had this to say – “If you asked me how to score a goal like that I wouldn’t be able to tell you. It’s just hitting it hard and seeing the net billow, that’s all.”

Here are the 10 goals nominated for the Puskas, including Ronaldo’s…

OH! And if you aren’t familiar with Puskas, here’s a little compilation.

MESSI & MARTA NAMED FIFA WORLD PLAYERS OF THE YEAR

Monday, December 21st, 2009

Picture 59

No surprises here.

Brazil’s female sensation Marta has won the world’s most prestigious soccer award for the fourth year in a row.  The 23 year old signed with the Los Angeles Sol earlier this year and is sure to breathe some much needed life into the women’s Soccer movement in America.

Messi, who scored a game winner against Estudiantes on Saturday to give his club a record 6 trophies in a single year, was heavily favored over runners-up Cristiano Ronaldo, Xavi, Iniesta, and Kaka.  When Barça made the decision to organize their offense in Messi’s favor, the gamble was monumental.  How on earth could this team have gotten rid of Ronaldinho in order to focus efforts on a child prodigy who came to the club at 13 years old?  It could have backfired, but it didn’t.  At 22, Messi is poised become the most beloved figure in the club’s unrivaled history.

FIFA CLUB WORLD CUP – DEC 9th – 19th

Friday, December 11th, 2009

Picture 28

The competition is only 6 years old, but its roots go back for decades.  The tournament is, in theory, a year-end celebration of the world’s best football clubs.  Champions from each continent are competing in the United Arab Emirates from December 9th – 19th.  Competitors include:

FC Barcelona: Champions League Winners
Club Estudiantes de la Plata: Libertadores Cup winners
Aukland City FC: OFC Club Championship winners
Pohang Steelers: Asian Champions League winners
TP Mazembe: CAF Champions League winners
Atlante Futbol Club: CONCACAF Champions Cup winners

And representing the host nation will be Al Ahli FC.

MLS teams need to figure out how to be more competitive in CONCACAF cup competition. If America’s best club can make it into a tournament with the UEFA Champions League winners, club soccer in this country will flourish. In order to make this happen, American clubs need to rally together and figure out how to play more games in multiple tournaments. While base salary for MLS players is staggeringly low, the organizations must understand that more games will lead to more competition, which will (we have to believe it) bring more money and fan support to clubs.

VOTING OPEN FOR FIFA’S “PUSKAS” GOAL OF THE YEAR AWARD

Monday, December 7th, 2009

Back in October, FIFA unveiled the Puskas Award which will be given to a player, male or female, who scores the greatest goal of the year.  While there may be some argument as to who should win, the nominees are up on FIFA’s website and voting is open to the public.  Essien, Torres, Cristiano Ronaldo, and Iniesta are among the finalists.

The Puskas award is named for Hungary’s famed attacking midfielder Ferenc Puskas (known in his day as the “Galloping Major”) who ruled at Real Madrid in the 50’s and early 60’s.

FIFA 10 IS HERE!!!

TEN MILLION BILLION THOUSAND YARD STARES!

OK, Folks. FIFA 10 is here and we are happy to give the ONELOVE stamp of approval. Of all the new features to this years edition, nothing compares to 360 degree ball movement. We believe that tighter movements and increased ball control could deliver a fatal blow to Fifa’s nemesis franchise – Pro Evolution Soccer, but the jury is still out.

USA AMONG THE ANNOINTED 32

Wednesday, October 14th, 2009

The US Men’s National Team pulled off a brilliant second half against Honduras to land a spot in the World Cup Finals this summer.

Connor Casey, who started in Lieu of yellow-card magnet Jozy Altidore, was at his absolute best, scoring twice to pull the US up from what was looking like a sure win for Honduras. (more…)
