RIBERY TO MISS INTER SHOWDOWN

Bayern Munich’s Franck Ribery is going to miss the Champions League final. The Court of Arbitration for Sport rejected his appeal against a 2-match ban following a red card in the Lyon semi-final.

UEFA had already dismissed an appeal, but CAS has ruled out any possibility of a Saturday showing against Inter.

Bayern had appealed to UEFA with the hope that UEFA would cut the ban to just the one game, which would have allowed Ribery to play in the final as he had already missed the second leg of the semi-final against Lyon.

Once again bureaucracy wins the day and sensibility loses out

WORLD CUP PROFILES: France (aka Les Bleus)

Wednesday, March 17th, 2010

By Jake Glavies

Four years after the most infamous head butt in soccer history and just weeks after a notorious Thierry Henry handball, France is trying to find itself before kickoff in South Africa.

Les Bleus lost a core group of players from its 2006 team that made it all the way to the finals before losing on penalties to Italy. With Zinedine Zidane, Fabien Barthez, Claude Makelele and Lilian Thuram all hanging up their jerseys after the defeat, paradoxical coach Raymond Domenech must look to a new group of players to lead France back to the top of the football world. While some players will be making their first trip to the World Cup, others have led Les Bleus to glory before.

Henry is the undisputed leader of this year’s team. Though not the player he once was, he’s still the most feared goal scorer in all of France – netting a record 51 scores for Les Bleus. The Barca forward will team with Nicolas Anelka, Franck Ribery and Yoann Gourcuff when the team is in attack mode. Waiting behind these recognizable faces are a host of young players itching to lead their country to victory.

Headlined by Real Madrid’s Karim Benzema, Domenech’s second options on the attack include some of the most talented youngsters in the world. Beyond Benzema, the coach will have Andre-Pierre Gignac, Florent Malouda and Loic Remy at his disposal – though none have much experience at the national level, they are all proving to be rising stars on the club scene.

The French defense boasts some of the top defenders in the world, but playing out of position in South Africa might prove to be the group’s downfall. Starting with the central defense, stalwart defender William Gallas will man his usual territory, while Barca’s Eric Abidal will move to the middle from his normal position on the left. Sebastien Squillaci, a natural center back, seems to be the odd man out in the middle – a move that has raised some eyebrows considering his affinity for playing at the center.

Overall, France is a capable team. They’ll bring some of the world’s most talented players to South Africa. But as it looks right now, they’ll all be leaving empty handed. Les Bleus will certainly make it out of the group stages – as they’ll face South Africa, Mexico and Uruguay – but possible matches against England, Brazil and Spain don’t bode well for a team that’s still trying to find its identity. Watch for France to make it to the quarterfinals but no further.

TITLE RACE IN GERMANY

Friday, February 19th, 2010

By Jake Glavies

The race for this season’s Bundesliga title has become one of the tightest competitions in Europe as surprise leader Bayer Leverkusen tries to hold off powerhouse Bayern Munich. Currently tied atop the Bundesliga table with 48 points each, the two teams are in a dead heat heading into the final stretch of the season.

Bayern – winners of seven of the last 10 German league crowns – has put together nine-straight wins and has gone 11-0-4 in its last 15 matches. Stocked with world-class talent, Louis van Gaal’s team is one of the best in Europe. Led by 24-year-old forward Mario Gomez at the front, Franck Ribery in the middle and defender Daniel van Buyten at the back, the squad is rock-solid from start to finish.

With just two of its next seven matches against teams in the top five in the league, Bayern will certainly be able to extend its already impressive winning streak over the coming weeks. Though every match poses a challenge, Gaal and Co. have certainly circled April 10 on their calendars. In just under two months, Bayern will travel to BayArena to face Leverkusen in the hopes of coming home with sole possession of the league lead.

While Bayern has won nine-straight, Leverkusen has managed to stay out of the loss column the entire season – a major factor in its quest for a first Bundesliga title. Working to debunk the nickname Neverkusen, manager Jupp Heynckes boasts the league’s top scorer in Stefan Kiessling, another double digit scorer in Eren Derdiyok and even a third option in Toni Kroos. This trio has helped Leverkusen to a league-high 48 goals, where it’s tied with Bayern.

The squad’s defense is what’s kept it in title contention all season, though. Allowing a league-low 18 scores, the defensive team of Sami Hyypia, Manuel Friedrich, Michal Kadlec and Daniel Schwabb has left a number of team’s frustrated.

Whatever transpires between now and the end of the season though, Bayern and Leverkusen have added an element of suspense to this Bundesliga season that will surely get even the most casual soccer fans on the edge of their seats.

ONELOVE CLUBWATCH: Looking at France and Germany

Wednesday, February 3rd, 2010

By Jake Glavies

In the shadow of the big three – England, Italy and Spain – the rest of Europe is quietly kicking around the pitch just hoping to be noticed.

Though most of the top players from France’s Ligue 1 and Germany’s Bundesliga eventually migrate to clubs in the big three, two of Europe’s more forgotten leagues are still churning out some great football.

Some of the best soccer being played in Europe right now can be found in France, where Bordeaux is looking to capture its second-straight Ligue 1 title. After ending Lyon’s seven year run atop the league standings last season, les Girondins are six points up on second place Montpellier – a squad that just last season was playing in Ligue 2. Led by Victor Hugo Montano’s seven goals, Montpellier is the feel-good-story of the soccer world; the only thing is, no one knows who they are.

Montpellier has a long way to go if it wants to knockoff the defending champions, though. In the pair’s first meeting this season, les Girondins took a 1-0 victory thanks to a Jussie score. The recently promoted team will look to prove it can hang with the big boys when the two teams face one another again March 6 at the Stade Jacques Chaban-Delmas.

Through 22 matches, Bordeaux is proving that it’s one of Europe’s heavy hitters. Boasting four players in the Castrol Index top 100 – including midfielders Yoann Gourcuff and Wendel, goalkeeper Cedric Carrasso and defender Marc Planus – les Girondins won’t easily give up on a second-straight championship.

Meanwhile, former giants Lyon are fourth after winning three-straight matches.

Currently in the German Bundesliga, it’s Bayer Leverkusen that’s causing headaches for the league’s best. After finishing ninth last season, Leverkusen is occupying the top spot – through 20 matches – ahead of German power Bayern Munich.

Winners of six of the last 10 league titles, Bayern Munich is trailing Leverkusen by two points in the most recent standings. The two teams played to a 1-1 draw back on Nov. 22, but they’ll meet again April 10 in what could be the match that decides the Bundesliga champion. Fielding four players in the Castrol top 20 – including defender Daniel van Buyten, forwards Mario Gomez and Ivica Olic and midfielder Arjen Robben – not to mention one of France’s top players in Franck Ribery, Bayern Munich might have too much firepower to be denied.

So remember, there’s more to soccer than just the Premier, La Liga and Serie A. In fact, if you look a little deeper you might just be surprised with what you find.

CHAMPIONS LEAGUE HIGHLIGHTS: BAYERN MUNICH vs JUVENTUS

Tuesday, December 8th, 2009

Bayern Munich is back. Today’s 3-1 victory can be attributed to tough defense and chance-creation from midfield. Juventus started strong with a goal from Trezeguet, but ultimately fell to an overpowering Munich offense. The German club made it into the round of 16 without having to rely on an injured Franck Ribery.

Some people criticize Bayern for having lost their “guiding philosophy,” but I say it was alive and well today.
