WEEKEND REVIEW: THE PREMIERSHIP

Sunday, August 29th, 2010

Yesterday in Los Angeles, faithful soccer heads were brewing coffee at 4:15 in the morning to see midday matches in Europe and didn’t unplug until around 9:30 pm, when the final whistle blew at the Home Depot Center.

We’ll begin with the Premiership…

Theo Walcott remedied our heavy eyelids with a stunning display of speed, followed by a masterful finish. That was around 5am on the west coast. Blackburn fought hard, equalized, and ultimately lost to a game-winner by a much improved Andrei Arshavin. It’s too early to tell, but we see Blackburn finishing mid-table. The Gunners are looking like a top-4 squad.

Wayne Rooney made his debut against West Ham and scored a classy penalty, nearly faking the boots off of Matthew Greene. The scrappy #10 did enough to show us that he will be on point this season, but our EPL goals of the day came from Nani and Berbatov, respectively.

Wigan, a last place team from a town famous for its rugby, fought hard for a 1-0 victory over Spurs. As far as psychological boosts go, Wigan takes the cake. It was less than a year ago that the club agreed to refund fans after a 9-1 thrashing by Redknapp’s boys. As for Tottenham, we believe there is still hope for a top 4 or 5 finish. If Redknapp is able to work Gallas into his defensive and achieves some balance between Champions League duties and the team’s EPL pursuits, there is hope. We’ve also got a North London derby ahead of us in the Carling Cup race, as Tottenham face Arsenal in the 3rd round.

Chelsea ran through Stoke City with goals from Malouda and Drogba. Cynics are waiting to see Ancelotti’s crew face a ‘real’ opponent, but we have to be realistic. This is most dangerous team in the Premiership.

Andy Carroll racked up another goal for Newcastle in a draw with Wolverhampton, which will fuel debate over his future with the English national squad.

Today we saw Aston Villa’s Luke Young score with a slow arcing FIFA style chip against Everton. Despite dominating possession in the 2nd half, Everton could not finish for the life of them. Seamus Coleman, a late sub for the Toffees, is our player of note. He has the sort of speed and creativity that Everton lacked in the opening 60 minutes of play.

Darren Bent gave Sunderland a 1-0 win over Manchester City in stoppage time. This is not a big surprise if you consider Sunderland’s early season record at home in years past.

Lastly, Fernando Torres scored his 50th goal at Anfield, which resulted in another L for newly promoted West Brom.

We’ve got a couple weeks before the EPL picks up again, thanks to international friendlies.  Who do you support in England and how are you feeling about the the first three weeks?

THE ONELOVE STORY

Sunday, May 16th, 2010

I’m Alex. My job at ONELOVE is to create and sustain a social network for all of America’s, and eventually the world’s, most passionate soccer players, coaches, and fans.

My older brother Jamie is an artist and a graphic designer (JRV). We initially came up with the idea for ONELOVE while playing pickup soccer in different parts of Los Angeles in 2006.

*A few things worth knowing about Jamie that he probably wouldn’t tell you himself: He believes in people. He never asks permission. His creativity is fueled by something he calls the “beautiful struggle.”

How it got started…

Jamie had been coaching soccer and snowboarding in Vermont before planning a weekend visit to the west coast. I had already spent 2 years out of college working tirelessly to make a career in the movie business. I was lost. He convinced me that it was time to venture out into the city and find a game.

I had no interest in playing at first. Jamie decided to go out on his own, returning every night with stories about the people he was meeting; how they played and how they interacted with one another.

He told me about the languages they spoke. He even talked about how conflicts would arise between players and then be resolved almost instantly by a beautiful play.

This was better than a movie. I had to go and see for myself. I realized, after touching a ball, that I had been sabotaging myself in a frenzied attempt to be ‘somebody’.

After a couple months of daily pickup games, I had forgotten what was so important about racing through life. Jamie’s weekend trip turned into a 3 year stay.

It all started with the ONELOVE 10. Jamie sketched it out one day after a game and we began printing it on shirts and sporting them wherever we went. On the street, people would inquire about the meaning of the ONELOVE 10. On the field, no one really had to ask. It was an ideal and a fundamental observation about the power of the game to bring people together.

A little history…

While our mother taught us how to love, it was our father who showed us how the game was meant to be played. He was a Greek immigrant who captained a championship squad at Colby College and would never (EVER) hang up his boots for as long as he lived. He would also never stop learning, dancing, cooking, inspiring, laughing, and LIVING until his time was up in 1995.

A little farther back…

It was 1989 and our family had just moved to Barcelona from New Hampshire. We had been raised on soccer, but we hadn’t yet embraced it as OUR game.

We lived in a tiny apartment above a Chinese restaurant at Arimón y Muntaner. The TV was busted when we got there and nobody seemed to mind that it never got fixed. Within a matter of days, we enrolled at the TARR football school. We took family trips to Camp Nou and to Mallorca for beach soccer.

For play time, we met up with friends and teammates for street ball in front of our building and futbol sala (now futsal) at the basketball courts up the street.

We even stayed at the dusty fields after practice until hunger beckoned us home for Mom’s chicken and rice at the family table. Those were the Huck Finn years. They planted the seed that would become ONELOVE.

All preachy-ness aside…

If you’re passionate about something, you don’t really care where it takes you. ONELOVE has given me a sense of freedom that I never knew existed. Money can’t buy this kind of wealth. If you work too hard (or not hard enough) and are haunted by the idea of happiness, freedom, purpose, and human connections, go find a game. It’s worth a try.

Make your voice heard…

The ONELOVE story is about impressions and decisive moments. If you ever get a burst of inspiration, write it up, paint it, sketch it, sing it, shoot it, do whatever it is you do, and send it to alex@onelovesoccer.com. We want to hear what you have to say.

BUILDING A SOCCER NATION

Tuesday, February 16th, 2010

By Yoni Ginsberg

Walking through the doors at the Los Angeles Convention Center this past weekend, the excitement and enthusiasm present at the Soccer Nation Expo was easily felt. As people strolled through the booths and spoke to representatives from various soccer related companies, indoor soccer matches, played by local youth club teams offered a sense of the beautiful game right at your fingertips. At the center of the entire convention was a small turf field, where professional coaches demonstrated exercises and drills meant to help sharpen the skills of other trainers.

The standout booths, as would be expected, were from Nike, Fox Soccer Channel, The Los Angeles Galaxy, and Chivas USA. Scores of soccer camp representatives, countless apparel suppliers, and even a beach soccer shootout, where contestants try to hit targets on sand, were all contained within the walls of the two day event. One of the more interesting booths was that of San Diego Boca FC. The club was founded in 2009 in order to promote and develop professional and youth soccer in the San Diego Area. The club hopes to build a soccer specific stadium and have an MLS franchise in the next 5 years. Currently, the club is part of the National Premier Soccer League.

Soccer Nation was sponsored by CALSOUTH – SoCal’s official youth soccer org.

The event demonstrates to the American soccer community more than what is just visible on the surface. The number of visitors as well as the number of presenters, prove to us that we are not alone. The soccer community in this country is growing exponentially.

Not so long ago people scoffed at those who enjoyed the beautiful game. If it wasn’t Football, Baseball, Basketball, or Hockey, then it wasn’t a sport. But, my friends, now is our time. We have risen from the depths of the unknown and we are taking the country by storm. The country’s focus will soon shift from it’s pastime to what should be hailed and crowned as the absolute monarch of sports, our beautiful game.

With the help of such events as the Soccer Nation Expo, we can reach out to those who have not been blessed by our sport, to those who do not know the gracefully elegant touch of Messi, and to those naysayers who claim that our passion will never succeed in the United States.  As a passerby commented just today at the Expo, “We’re here under a common goal, to enjoy our game and to be together.” Joga Bonito. Play Beautiful. OneLove.

WORTH HIS WEIGHT IN GOALS

Despite a Baggio moment at the MLS Cup, Landon Donovan is being courted by LA for a life-long commitment. The league MVP’s current $900,000 paycheck is expected to be doubled, making him the highest paid American ever to play professionally in the US.

Keeping American stars in the MLS is more sensible than prying older players from overseas. Donovan could be healthy for another 3 world cups (including SA) and will remain a major figure in US Soccer for decades to come. As a team leader, he may also attract more top tier Americans back to the US.

SUPERCLASSICO PLAYOFF IN LOS ANGELES

Sunday, November 8th, 2009

The Galaxy take homefield advantage over Chivas USA in what will be a heated contest. A confident Landon Donovan, who is being linked to Celtic and (less likely) Liverpool for possible transfers after this season, believes that Galaxy supporters will transform the atmosphere from last week at the Home Depot Center. The aggregate is tied, so a win is necessary for either side to advance. They kick off at 4:30 PST, live on Fox Soccer Channel.

USMNT PLAYER PROFILES: LANDON DONOVAN

Sunday, November 1st, 2009

Picture 12

Donovan is the lifeblood of the National squad. All Galaxy-induced biases aside, we believe that Donovan has found his calling as a team leader. He is a fast, scrappy playmaker who can do just about anything on the field from set pieces to counter-attacks to collaborative efforts. It’s no wonder that he holds the all-time records for goals and career caps with the USMNT. (more…)
