FIFA CLUB WORLD CUP – DEC 9th – 19th

Friday, December 11th, 2009

Picture 28

The competition is only 6 years old, but its roots go back for decades.  The tournament is, in theory, a year-end celebration of the world’s best football clubs.  Champions from each continent are competing in the United Arab Emirates from December 9th – 19th.  Competitors include:

FC Barcelona: Champions League Winners
Club Estudiantes de la Plata: Libertadores Cup winners
Aukland City FC: OFC Club Championship winners
Pohang Steelers: Asian Champions League winners
TP Mazembe: CAF Champions League winners
Atlante Futbol Club: CONCACAF Champions Cup winners

And representing the host nation will be Al Ahli FC.

MLS teams need to figure out how to be more competitive in CONCACAF cup competition. If America’s best club can make it into a tournament with the UEFA Champions League winners, club soccer in this country will flourish. In order to make this happen, American clubs need to rally together and figure out how to play more games in multiple tournaments. While base salary for MLS players is staggeringly low, the organizations must understand that more games will lead to more competition, which will (we have to believe it) bring more money and fan support to clubs.

WORTH HIS WEIGHT IN GOALS

Monday, November 30th, 2009

Despite a Baggio moment at the MLS Cup, Landon Donovan is being courted by LA for a life-long commitment. The league MVP’s current $900,000 paycheck is expected to be doubled, making him the highest paid American ever to play professionally in the US.

Keeping American stars in the MLS is more sensible than prying older players from overseas. Donovan could be healthy for another 3 world cups (including SA) and will remain a major figure in US Soccer for decades to come. As a team leader, he may also attract more top tier Americans back to the US.

Gonzales is the second consecutive Galaxy player to win the prize, owing a great deal of his success to solid leadership. Incidentally, Bruce Arena was yesterday named MLS Coach of the Year.

Tomorrow’s game airs live from the Home Depot Center at 8pm PST on ESPN2 and ESPN Deportes.

CHIVAS LOSE PREKI AT SEASON’S END

Thursday, November 12th, 2009

306-preki-111209

Chivas USA coach Preki Radosavljevic has left the club after earning MLS Coach of the Year in ‘07 and earning an impressive record of 49-29-21 in three seasons.  Preki lead Chivas USA to the playoffs all three years, but, to the disappointment of fans, never made it past the first round.  After last week’s loss to the Galaxy, change was imminent.  Without getting into specifics, Preki says that he will seek new coaching opportunities.

Assistant coach Martin Vasquez will be filling in for Preki until a replacement is found, though some speculate that Vasquez will take over the post full-time.  A seasoned veteran on and off the field, Vasquez is the only player in history to make appearances for both the Mexican and the American national teams.  He is respected by players and fans and should have a relatively easy time transitioning into a leadership role.

SUPERCLASSICO PLAYOFF IN LOS ANGELES

Sunday, November 8th, 2009

The Galaxy take homefield advantage over Chivas USA in what will be a heated contest. A confident Landon Donovan, who is being linked to Celtic and (less likely) Liverpool for possible transfers after this season, believes that Galaxy supporters will transform the atmosphere from last week at the Home Depot Center. The aggregate is tied, so a win is necessary for either side to advance. They kick off at 4:30 PST, live on Fox Soccer Channel.

MLS PLAYER SPOTLIGHT: LOGAN PAUSE

Saturday, November 7th, 2009

LP

The Chicago Fire have their work cut out against New England tonight.  The Rev’s are a strong team, especially when Joseph is performing up front.  What Chicago needs is a rock solid midfield to maintain possession and create attacking opportunities at every turn.  This is where defensive midfielder Logan Pause excels.  The former Tarheel captain is a masterful passer who always seems to have the first touch in a Chicago attack.  (more…)

AGING FOOTBALL HEROES AND THE MLS

Saturday, November 7th, 2009

Picture 15

The Red Bulls will begin next season with a brand new stadium and, perhaps, the addition of a world football deity to the roster.   Thierry Henry could easily give New York three seasons of healthy play which would qualify as the city’s most important signing since Pelé.

Beckham’s arrival in Los Angeles came with equal amounts of praise and criticism for a deal that many consider to be unnecessarily rich. Beckham has been great for the Galaxy. From the moment of his late start against Chelsea at the Home Depot Center in 2007, Beckham has elevated the likes of Landon Donovan (and all of Bruce Arena’s new talent) to new heights. They had some growing pains to overcome, and investors may lose money on the deal, but it’s clear that Donovan’s world class performance this year has come in part from a productive onfield relationship with Beckham. Henry will bring this sort of stewardship to New York if he finds a few young players to mentor, but this begs a deeper question about the future of the MLS.

In order for aging superstars to be effective mentors and advocates in the MLS, there must be a new class of young players to benefit from their leadership. Like Beckham, Henry brings a Kobe Bryant sized ego to an American sport that isn’t yet on par with the NBA. LA Galaxy seem to have found the perfect solution to this problem in Landon Donovan who has retained the captain’s armband throughout Beckham’s time in the States. Again, it took some time, but Beckham grew comfortable with his own celebrity and was able to allow Donovan a shot at being front and center. When this happened, the two became a dominating force. We are seeing a new side of Donovan. He is a great big American soccer star. Maybe we’re jumping the gun a little bit, but he’s headed in that direction.

Cruyff & Kaiser
Cruyff & Beckenbauer in NYC – 1978

The NASL made the mistake of overspending on foreign stars and underspending on young American talent, which has created a stigma among MLS teams who are fearful of Beckham-sized deals. One wrong move of this magnitute could easily ruin a franchise, but we have to consider the upside. Cosmos players like Beckenbauer, Cruyff, and Carlos Alberto had similar effects on then-USMNT captain and teammate Rick Davis. If the MLS can find a balance, we are headed in the right direction.

Clint Dempsey

America’s favorite rapper/footballer is having an incredible year.

Dempsey’s 3 Confederations Cup goals helped change the course of American soccer history. He also had two game winning goals in the World Cup qualifiers against Cuba and Barbados last year. A former MLS “Rookie of The Year,” Dempsey continues to represent at Fulham, most recently racking up goals against Chelsea and Liverpool in a season that appears to be gaining in momentum. (more…)

USMNT PLAYER PROFILES: LANDON DONOVAN

Sunday, November 1st, 2009

Picture 12

Donovan is the lifeblood of the National squad. All Galaxy-induced biases aside, we believe that Donovan has found his calling as a team leader. He is a fast, scrappy playmaker who can do just about anything on the field from set pieces to counter-attacks to collaborative efforts. It’s no wonder that he holds the all-time records for goals and career caps with the USMNT. (more…)
