CAPE VERDE HOLDS PORTUGAL

Ronaldo fails to impress – photo credit: AP

Portugal struggled against minnows Cape Verde Islands earlier today.

Portugal had a full compliment of first team players on show but even some of the worlds greatest players couldn’t make the break through against the small african nation ranked a lowly 117th in the world.

Despite numerous chances, even the great Ronaldo failed to score and Portugal manager Queiroz will hope his talented side will start to produce the goods soon as their first World Cup match is only 3 weeks away.

Portugal qualified for the World cup only after beating Bosnia in one of the European sections play off matches and the Portuguese have always failed to reach the heights expectd of them in World Cup.

Few could argue that they have a team filled with star players but on this occasion tonight they were unable to deliver the goods and the question has to be asked if they will be able to raise their game when they come up against Brazil in their World Cup group.

Portugals team included Ronaldo, Deco, Carvalho, Ferreira, Bruno Alves, Nani & Mendes.

TOP 10 MOST EXPENSIVE NATIONAL TEAMS

Wednesday, May 12th, 2010

by Rick Minars

Europe’s Frontier Economics has released a list of the top ten most expensive teams participating in the 2010 World Cup. Shown here in Euros (rounded to the nearest million), the numbers represent the sum of each player’s current value for their respective club team.

Top Ten:

1. Spain- Worth €303 million euros. Which includes players for example, Iniesta worth (€44m), and Torres at (€43m) to help make bulk of what the team is worth.

2. Argentina- Worth €293 million. Yes of course, “Mi Argentina quierida!” Unfortunately, this team is worth this much because Messi is worth €140 million. That’s right he is worth way more than Cristiano Ronaldo. Also in the mix for Argentina is Gonzalo Higuain who is reported to be worth €53 million. I wonder what Argentina would really be worth if Maradona selected all the overseas players that play in Europe rather than some of the local based players?

3. England- Worth €263 million. Notable, Wayne Rooney being the most expensive player on the English side worth at €59 million.

4. Brazil- Worth €223 million. Yes tell me about it! Absolutely shocking! The team with the most World Cups won and with quality players all over the world falls in a shocking fourth place! Kaka is the most expensive player on the Brazilian national side worth at €41 million.

5. Portugal- Worth €201 million. The bulk is carried by Cristiano Ronaldo worth €95 million for the Portugal national side.

6. France- Worth €180 million. Franck Ribery was noted as being one of the most expensive on the team.

7.Germany- Worth €156 million. Germany actually leads Holland by a couple of thousands with notable players like Ballack, Podolski and Lahm leading the way for the German side.

8. Holland- Worth €156 million. Holland having quality players such as Robben and Van Persie leading their national side in being the most expensive.

9. Ivory Coast- Worth €130 million. Notable players leading the way for Ivory Coast is Didier Drogba.

10. Italy- Worth €127 million. Yes the reigning World Cup Champions are the last team to cap the top ten most expensive national sides in the World Cup.

AROUND THE WORLD: Benfica

Thursday, February 25th, 2010

By Jake Glavies

In a country with a population smaller than that of Los Angeles or New York, a former football power is plotting its return to glory.

Situated in the Portuguese capital of Lisbon, Benfica – one of the most decorated teams of the 1960s – has claimed a league-leading 31 Portuguese Liga titles, but has recently fallen on tough times. But in its heyday, it was known as a giant slayer. During an era when Real Madrid had won five-straight European Champions’ Cups, now known as the Champions League, spanning from 1955-60, Benfica was the first to knock the Spanish giant from its lofty perch. In 1961, tiny Benfica claimed the first of two-straight European Champions’ Cups, beating Barcelona to claim the title of best in Europe. The following year the Eagles managed to top Madrid in the finals to win their last European title.

Throughout the rest of the decade, Benfica continued its push for greatness. Making it to the European Cup finals in 1963, ’65 and ’68, the Lisbon squad was one of the top clubs of its day. And it was reflected in the company it kept. After downing Barcelona and Real Madrid in its two cup victories, Benfica clashed with such giants as Milan (1963), Inter (1965) and Manchester United (1968) before the golden age in Lisbon came to a close. By the time the decade was over, the squad had added eight Portuguese Liga titles and three Portuguese Cups to its haul.

The Eagles soared to the top of the soccer ranks on the back of the legendary Eusebio. As the only Benfica player to ever win the Ballon d’Or (1965) and European Golden Boot Awards (1968, 1973), it was Eusebio that carried the club to greatness. Often overlooked in the annals of soccer history, he managed to score an astonishing 727 goals in 715 career matches. He helped Benfica to four more Liga titles and two Portuguese Cups before leaving the club in 1975.

Benfica managed to reach the European Cup final twice in the late 1980s, but after Eusebio left the squad became a shell of its former self. Not only did it drop out of the European scene, but it was struggling to be the best in its own country. Winning just 10 league titles since 1975, with the most recent coming in 2004, the Eagles have given way to rival club Porto. Benfica may have been the class of the Liga in the past, but it’s Porto leading the way now – winning six of the last seven league titles and 24 overall.

The squad has reason to be hopeful of a turnaround, though. Through 20 matches this season, new manager Jorge Jesus has the Eagles back on top of the Liga table. Led by talented players such as Oscar Cardozo, 16 goals, and goalkeeper Quim – who’s allowed just 10 scores this season with 11 clean sheets – the future is looking very bright for Benfica.

NIKE PLANTS A 30ft STAKE IN MADRID

Tuesday, February 23rd, 2010

A 30 ft. statue was unveiled yesterday in a quiet corner of Madrid, depicting a stoic Cristiano Ronaldo in his national uniform.  Red and green confetti floated in the streets as Portuguese fans applauded the already deified superstar.

you have to wonder, though.  Is this for real?  Apparenty Nike sponsored the statue, which would explain why he is not wearing the Adidas-sponsored Real Madrid uniform.  If it is real (and the city decides to keep the statue in its place) it will be among the greatest jabs Nike has ever taken at Adidas.  Thoughts?

175px-CRonaldo

Ronaldo is back in training with Real Madrid. Now we can find out if he actually is the best player in the club’s history. Not to put any pressure on the guy, but he got off to a pretty damn good start.

Nani will have to deliver sans Ronaldo for one more crucial qualifier tomorrow, but it may allow the national squad a chance to get a win on their own. If they can pull it off, they’ll have a shot in South Africa.

THE ROAD TO JO’BURG – EUROPEAN PLAYOFFS THIS WEEK

Monday, November 16th, 2009

Happy Monday! This week is all about South Africa. The final European qualifiers will be held on Wednesday for France/Ireland, Greece/Ukraine, Russia/Slovenia, and Portugal/Bosnia-Herzegovina.

Pepe tangles with Bosnia’s Msimovic on Saturday.

Ireland, who lost 1-0 to France in Dublin this Saturday, will head to Paris in need of a minor miracle on Wednesday. France may have the star power, but they will need to stay focused and fill in gaps left by the absences of Toulalan, Ribery, and Abidal. This ought to go France’s way.

Ukraine hosts Greece after a 0-0 draw in Athens on Saturday. Both teams are in top form, though many speculate that Greece will find the win with a slight attacking advantage.

Portugal heads to Bosnia-Herzegovina with a 1 goal lead in the aggregate. Nani has done a great job filling in for C. Ronaldo, though it’s difficult to pick a favorite going into this match.

After a well balanced match in Moscow, Russia lead Slovenia 2-1 heading into Wednesday. Russian captain and Arsenal sharp-shooter Andrei Arshavin will have to step up in order to keep Slovenia out of the running.
