Casillas excited for clash in Buenos Aires – (Alex V/OLFC)
Tomorrow’s friendly between Argentina and Spain was to be held in New York until Spanish and Argentine FA’s agreed to change venues and play in Buenos Aires at the world famous Antonio Vespuscio Liberti Estadio Monumental. The stadium is a historical landmark; Home to River Plate and host to the 1978 World Cup and qualifiers for the upcoming Copa America.
Despite a heavy post-World Cup schedule, none of the Spanish players could turn down the opportunity to face off with Argentina. Xavi, Iniesta, Busquets, Villa, and Casillas (to name a few) have been on the ground for days now, training in and around some of the world’s most celebrated soccer landmarks. Everyone is expecting a world-class display on the pitch, but many of the Spanish players have put equal value on the importance of visiting a city with such such an impassioned soccer community.
When asked about his Barça teammates coming to visit Buenos Aires, Messi replied, “they are very motivated and excited to play us. Firstly to be able to visit Argentina and the Stadium, and secondly (to experience) the way the fans express themeselves here in Argentina.”
