AROUND THE WORLD: International Friendlies

Tuesday, March 2nd, 2010

In preparation for the World Cup, there will be some International Friendlies this week. Lets take a look at the matches:

Ireland vs Brazil- Croke Park hosted the first game today with Ireland taking on the Brazilians. Keith Andrews had an own-goal for Ireland, but it was Robinho’s goal that will surely grab headlines tomorrow. The Santos striker is showing us that he will be ready for South Africa, despite a lackluster stint at Manchester City.

The remaining matches will be held on Wednesday.

Germany vs Argentina- The European powerhouse faces Messi and friends at Bayern’s Allianz Arena. This match should have a final feel to it as I’m sure each of these coaches will want to test his squad’s potential. Prediction: Germany with the home field advantage, 2-0.

Netherlands vs USA- American head coach Bob Bradley has filled his squad with non MLS players including Joze Altidore, Landon Donovan, and Maurice Edu (who most recently grabbed a game-winner in the Galsgow derby). However, the Dutch are always an extremely technical team with great passing and discipline. Prediction: Wesley Sneijder with a brace, Netherlands 3-1.

England vs Egypt- The Three Lions face the newly crowned African champions in Wembley Stadium.  Rooney, Lampard, and new captain Rio Ferdinand shouldn’t have trouble taking on Amr Zaki and Mido. Prediction: England 3-0.

France vs Spain- Perhaps the day’s most interesting and exciting match has Les Blues taking on the holding European champions.  The game is in the Stade De France and the crowd will surely play a factor in this one. France, however, will need to do a lot in order to keep up with a team (which I think) is better than they are. Prediction: 1-1, Benzema and David Villa.

What do you think?  Predictions anybody?

ROBINHO AND CITY

Thursday, January 28th, 2010

By Jake Glavies

After digging deep into its coffers and spending a combined $80 million to bring in Carlos Tevez and Emmanuel Adebayor this past offseason, Manchester City felt primed for a push into the top four.

But those hopes took a large blow Thursday, when record signing Robinho was allowed to leave City for a six month loan to Brazilian club Santos. Through his early season struggles, coach Roberto Mancini remained optimistic that his star player could get back on track, but it appears he’s given up hope. And for the immediate future, the forward won’t be missed.

After scoring a team-high 14 goals during the 2008-09 season – his first with City – the Brazilian has taken a turn for the worse. Through 10 Premier League matches this year, Robinho has failed to find the back of the net; though it wasn’t for lack of trying, as he attempted 23 shots, good for fifth highest on the team. The Brazilian’s lone goal came just five days ago, when he scored in the 84th minute to help City to a 4-2 victory over Scunthorpe United in FA Cup action.

Robinho had slipped so far down the food chain at City, that he was unused in four matches this season – including Carling Cup games against Manchester United and Arsenal. He also came off the bench in four other matches. But the bench is no place for a player earning $51 million – or $257,000 a week for that matter.

With Robinho’s dip in form came the rumors of a move away from City. Luckily for Mancini and the rest of the Manchester squad, the move isn’t for good. Though never a dominant goal scorer, Robinho – if able to return to form – could be the perfect complement to Tevez.

And Santos seems like just the place where the 26 year old can regain his confidence. After joining the club at the age of 15, he went on to lead the squad to its first ever Brazilian title in 2002 before leaving for Real Madrid. Europe might be the place to be, but when you need a little pick-me-up sometimes there’s no place like home.

IT’S ALLOVE PLAYER

Monday, January 25th, 2010

There are a LOT of Robinho haters in the world right now.  He got spoiled and lost it.
But we can’t write him off just yet.  I had to remind myself of what made him so special to begin with.  Check out this footage and tell me he wont make a comeback.

INTRODUCING… ROBERTO MAN-CITI!!!

Monday, December 28th, 2009

Picture 31

The new Blues manager took over for Mark Hughes at what seemed like an inopportune time.  And then they started winning.  It’s only been two games, but something is different about this club.  For one, I am surprised at the fact that Craig Bellamy is STILL so central to the Man City offense.  He could have easily turned down his level of play when Mark Hughes took the hike.

Check out highlights from today’s 3-0 win.  Mark Hughes will undoubtedly find his footing at another club, but Mancini has managed (so far) to do something that Hughes couldn’t perfect.  He’s made a team as good as the sum of it’s idiosyncratic parts.

PREMIER LEAGUE VIDEO HIGHLIGHTS: MANCHESTER CITY vs STOKE CITY

Sunday, December 27th, 2009

Roberto Mancini’s first game as manager at Man City proved to be a solid jumping off point.  Goals came from Teves and Petrov for a 2-0 result.

While there is still some tension between Mancini and Craig Bellamy following the abrubt firing of former manager Mark Hughes, the Welsh international got his playing time.  You have to give Mancini credit for being so diplomatic with his top talent.

The least impressive performance probably came from the most talented (arguably) player on the pitch, Robinho.  There is no telling what will happen to this club in January, but it’s looking like they have solid leadership in Mancini.  The former Inter manager doesn’t seem to be at all fazed by the departure of Hughes.  He is there to do a job and we can’t really hold that against him.  Assuming they can stay together as one, City have a top 4 finish in their sights.
