PUYOL SHINES BRIGHTEST vs MANNSCHAFT

Thursday, July 8th, 2010

by Marc Roseblade

The European champions, Spain, have joined Netherlands in the World Cup Final on Sunday after defeating Germany 1 nil in Durban tonight.

Carles Puyol’s 74th-minute header was enough to secure La Rojas a spot in their first ever FIFA World Cup final.

No matter who wins at Soccer City on Sunday, history will be made.

Tonight, Joachim Low’s men (minus wunderkind Thomas Muller) were unable to repeat the displays with which they swept aside England and Argentina in previous rounds. Once again, the Germans suffered a semi-final defeat.

This was Spain’s first World Cup semi-final and Vicente del Bosque’s side dominated possession from the start. Spain had dropped Torres from the starting eleven. Instead, Pedro Rodriguez had his first start of the finals and made a mark early on as he slipped a through-ball to David Villa after just six minutes. Despite a solid finish, German goalkeeper Manuel Neuer made the save.

In the 14th minute, Spain had a corner where Iniesta drove in a cross that eventual goalscorer, Puyol met with a flying header that flew over the crossbar.

Germany who were happy to play deep in their own half, continued to counter-attack when Podolski played in Ozil on the left before he brought Klose into play on the edge of the box, but the Bayern Munich forward was crowded out.
Spanish keeper Casillas needed to be alert on the half hour mark when he turned a 30-yard daisycutter from Trochowski by the post.

Germany called for a penalty on the stroke of half time when Ramos looked to have brought Ozil down in the box, but the referee waved play on.

The second half began with Alonso driving a shot narrowly wide from 25 yards, then Villa bent another attempt just wide of the post.  Pedro was next to try his luck as he made the German keeper Neuer make a fingertip save. As Mertesacker moved slowly to clear the rebound, Iniesta leaped on the opportunity to fire in a low cross that Villa just barely missed.

Casillas had to make another save on 69 minutes as German sub Kroos side-footed an effort at goal, but it was at the other end that the all-important goal was scored. With 16 minutes remaining on the clock Xavi fired in a corner that was met by the flying Puyol, and powered his header past the diving Neuer.

Pedro could have finished the game off in the final minutes when he and Torres burst through the German defense with a 2 on 1 assault. It looked as though Pedro would set Torres up with his first goal of the tournament, but the young Barca striker held on too long. In the end, Spain won.

We now look forward to history being made as a new name will proudly appear as FIFA World Cup Champions 2010. No one could argue that these two teams deserve to be at Soccer City on Sunday.

The only question that needs answered now is, Will it be La Rojas or the Oranje?

SPAIN ANNOUNCES OFFICIAL ROSTER

Thursday, May 20th, 2010

by Marc Roseblade

Pedro, Valdes, and Martinez will represent Spain in South Africa

Fernando Torres and Cesc Fabregas have both been included in Spain’s final 23-man squad for the 2010 South Africa World Cup next month along with uncapped trio Victor Valdes, Pedro Rodriguez and Javi Martinez. (Valdes has never been capped? Really?)

The Liverpool striker Torres and Barcelona target Fabregas are still recovering from injuries that forced them to miss the end of the English Premiership but will still travel to the finals.

Valdes has been chosen as the 3rd goalie with Diego Lopez and David De Gea missing out on a keeper’s spot. Valdes’ team-mate, winger Pedro, has also been included following a fine season with the La Liga champions. The other newcomer to the squad is Athletic Bilbaos’ midfielder Martinez.

Those cut from the 30 man original squad are Cesar Azpilicueta, Marcos Senna, Santi Cazorla, Dani Guiza and Alvaro Negredo.

Spain’s first round opponents in South Africa are Switzerland, Chile and Honduras.

The Euro 2008 champions will be hoping to continue an excellent run of form in the past few years and are quietly confident of actually winning the World Cup for the 1st time.
Viva España!!!

FORLAN FLOORS FULHAM

Thursday, May 13th, 2010

by Marc Roseblade

Athletico Madrid won European silverware for the first time last night with a 2-1 extra time win over English side Fulham.

The Spanish side waited until the 116th minute to score the winning goal and reap heartache on the Fulham players and fans.

Atlético Madrid celebrate in the Spanish capital

Diego Forlan, who had a troubled time at Old Trafford when he played for Manchester United, seems to relish playing against English opponents. He tormented Liverpool in the semi-finals and did a bit of the same against Fulham last night, scoring both goals in the 2-1 win. The Uruguayan striker now heads into the World Cup with a golden Europa League medal hanging from his neck.

Forlan’s 2nd goal seemed to take a deflection past the London side’s goalkeeper and was a crushing end to the game for Roy Hodgson and his players whose credibility has risen to new levels with this European cup run.

Athletico dominated the game as Fulham struggled to reach their form from previous rounds and even their talisman Bobby Zamora, who was struggling with injury, had to be substituted early in the 2nd half. It looks like surgery (and not a last minute Capello call-up) is imminent for Zamora.

Atlético’s players arrived home at 06.40CET to face hundreds of screaming fans who had waited all night for a glimpse of their heroes. After a deserved rest, the squad mounted an open-top bus at the gates of the Vicente Calderón for a long procession through the streets of Madrid. Thousands of fans lined the route that would eventually lead to the Neptune fountain, the site where Los Colchoneros traditionally celebrate.

Its been 48 years since Los Rojiblancos’ last European victory and with the team they have, few will doubt that it won’t be as long until the next one.

TOP 10 MOST EXPENSIVE NATIONAL TEAMS

Wednesday, May 12th, 2010

by Rick Minars

Europe’s Frontier Economics has released a list of the top ten most expensive teams participating in the 2010 World Cup. Shown here in Euros (rounded to the nearest million), the numbers represent the sum of each player’s current value for their respective club team.

Top Ten:

1. Spain- Worth €303 million euros. Which includes players for example, Iniesta worth (€44m), and Torres at (€43m) to help make bulk of what the team is worth.

2. Argentina- Worth €293 million. Yes of course, “Mi Argentina quierida!” Unfortunately, this team is worth this much because Messi is worth €140 million. That’s right he is worth way more than Cristiano Ronaldo. Also in the mix for Argentina is Gonzalo Higuain who is reported to be worth €53 million. I wonder what Argentina would really be worth if Maradona selected all the overseas players that play in Europe rather than some of the local based players?

3. England- Worth €263 million. Notable, Wayne Rooney being the most expensive player on the English side worth at €59 million.

4. Brazil- Worth €223 million. Yes tell me about it! Absolutely shocking! The team with the most World Cups won and with quality players all over the world falls in a shocking fourth place! Kaka is the most expensive player on the Brazilian national side worth at €41 million.

5. Portugal- Worth €201 million. The bulk is carried by Cristiano Ronaldo worth €95 million for the Portugal national side.

6. France- Worth €180 million. Franck Ribery was noted as being one of the most expensive on the team.

7.Germany- Worth €156 million. Germany actually leads Holland by a couple of thousands with notable players like Ballack, Podolski and Lahm leading the way for the German side.

8. Holland- Worth €156 million. Holland having quality players such as Robben and Van Persie leading their national side in being the most expensive.

9. Ivory Coast- Worth €130 million. Notable players leading the way for Ivory Coast is Didier Drogba.

10. Italy- Worth €127 million. Yes the reigning World Cup Champions are the last team to cap the top ten most expensive national sides in the World Cup.

Sergio Canales has been the talk of Spanish soccer for a few months now. A move to Real Madrid should give us all a chance to see how he hangs with the big boys.

GUTI SPEAKS OUT ON REAL TROUBLES

Thursday, November 12th, 2009

59632_hp

The spanish midfielder has opened up publicly about his problems with Real Madrid, set to be broadcast this Sunday on Spain’s Intereconomica TV.

Apparently, Guti disapproves of team President Florentino Perez and manager Pellegrini. According to Goal.com, he also believes that foreign players don’t “understand the values of Real Madrid.” While the interview could easily put an end to the veteran’s career at Madrid, he’s been there long enough to make a few good points. People will undoubtedly listen and Pellegrini’s future at the club will be further jeopardized.

Guti’s point about understanding the value of Real Madrid is something to ponder. He rose through the club’s youth development system and has seen most of the world’s greatest talent come and go. He’s seen Madrid through unrivaled success and abject failure. Madrid’s dependency on celebrity imports probably wouldn’t be under such scrutiny if Ronaldo were fit to play, but you can’t fault a single star for a team’s innumerable flaws. There is more to this problem than a few firings can solve. What los Blancos need is a unifying leader.
