- Just Fontaine, former French international, currently holds the record for most goals scored in a single World Cup (13)!
- Patrick Vieira, Karim Benzema, Louis Saha, Samir Nasri, and Philippe Mexes were all surprisingly excluded by Raymond Domenech in his preliminary World Cup roster. These starts total a stunning 180 caps. These players would minimal trouble finding their way into any other country’s squad list based on sheer talent.

WORLD CUP PROFILES: France (aka Les Bleus)

Wednesday, March 17th, 2010

By Jake Glavies

Four years after the most infamous head butt in soccer history and just weeks after a notorious Thierry Henry handball, France is trying to find itself before kickoff in South Africa.

Les Bleus lost a core group of players from its 2006 team that made it all the way to the finals before losing on penalties to Italy. With Zinedine Zidane, Fabien Barthez, Claude Makelele and Lilian Thuram all hanging up their jerseys after the defeat, paradoxical coach Raymond Domenech must look to a new group of players to lead France back to the top of the football world. While some players will be making their first trip to the World Cup, others have led Les Bleus to glory before.

Henry is the undisputed leader of this year’s team. Though not the player he once was, he’s still the most feared goal scorer in all of France – netting a record 51 scores for Les Bleus. The Barca forward will team with Nicolas Anelka, Franck Ribery and Yoann Gourcuff when the team is in attack mode. Waiting behind these recognizable faces are a host of young players itching to lead their country to victory.

Headlined by Real Madrid’s Karim Benzema, Domenech’s second options on the attack include some of the most talented youngsters in the world. Beyond Benzema, the coach will have Andre-Pierre Gignac, Florent Malouda and Loic Remy at his disposal – though none have much experience at the national level, they are all proving to be rising stars on the club scene.

The French defense boasts some of the top defenders in the world, but playing out of position in South Africa might prove to be the group’s downfall. Starting with the central defense, stalwart defender William Gallas will man his usual territory, while Barca’s Eric Abidal will move to the middle from his normal position on the left. Sebastien Squillaci, a natural center back, seems to be the odd man out in the middle – a move that has raised some eyebrows considering his affinity for playing at the center.

Overall, France is a capable team. They’ll bring some of the world’s most talented players to South Africa. But as it looks right now, they’ll all be leaving empty handed. Les Bleus will certainly make it out of the group stages – as they’ll face South Africa, Mexico and Uruguay – but possible matches against England, Brazil and Spain don’t bode well for a team that’s still trying to find its identity. Watch for France to make it to the quarterfinals but no further.

IRISH DEMAND A REPLAY

Thursday, November 19th, 2009

John Delaney, head of the Football Association of Ireland, is formally requesting (demanding) that Wednesday’s qualifier with France be replayed. Now that Theirry Henry has admitted to handling the ball, this may present an opportunity for some reform in world soccer policy. In all fairness, the Irish deserve a replay. France would probably still win, but it wouldn’t hurt either side to do so.

And what does this suggest about the future of in-game video playbacks? In soccer, the ref is god. He is responsible for keeping the game moving, for maintaining a level of fair play, and ultimately ensuring the safety of fans and players. If FIFA introduces camera playback into games, gameplay will be less fluid and the ref will take a back seat to technology. Playback works much better in sports like rugby and American football, where success can be measured out in smaller increments. But in soccer, breaking the flow of play could take the energy out of a game. We support FIFA’s idea to bring 2 extra ref’s into the mix. Until that change happens, why not have a replay?

AGING FOOTBALL HEROES AND THE MLS

Saturday, November 7th, 2009

Picture 15

The Red Bulls will begin next season with a brand new stadium and, perhaps, the addition of a world football deity to the roster.   Thierry Henry could easily give New York three seasons of healthy play which would qualify as the city’s most important signing since Pelé.

Beckham’s arrival in Los Angeles came with equal amounts of praise and criticism for a deal that many consider to be unnecessarily rich. Beckham has been great for the Galaxy. From the moment of his late start against Chelsea at the Home Depot Center in 2007, Beckham has elevated the likes of Landon Donovan (and all of Bruce Arena’s new talent) to new heights. They had some growing pains to overcome, and investors may lose money on the deal, but it’s clear that Donovan’s world class performance this year has come in part from a productive onfield relationship with Beckham. Henry will bring this sort of stewardship to New York if he finds a few young players to mentor, but this begs a deeper question about the future of the MLS.

In order for aging superstars to be effective mentors and advocates in the MLS, there must be a new class of young players to benefit from their leadership. Like Beckham, Henry brings a Kobe Bryant sized ego to an American sport that isn’t yet on par with the NBA. LA Galaxy seem to have found the perfect solution to this problem in Landon Donovan who has retained the captain’s armband throughout Beckham’s time in the States. Again, it took some time, but Beckham grew comfortable with his own celebrity and was able to allow Donovan a shot at being front and center. When this happened, the two became a dominating force. We are seeing a new side of Donovan. He is a great big American soccer star. Maybe we’re jumping the gun a little bit, but he’s headed in that direction.

Cruyff & Kaiser
Cruyff & Beckenbauer in NYC – 1978

The NASL made the mistake of overspending on foreign stars and underspending on young American talent, which has created a stigma among MLS teams who are fearful of Beckham-sized deals. One wrong move of this magnitute could easily ruin a franchise, but we have to consider the upside. Cosmos players like Beckenbauer, Cruyff, and Carlos Alberto had similar effects on then-USMNT captain and teammate Rick Davis. If the MLS can find a balance, we are headed in the right direction.
